Pag-e 6 THE BATTALION Wednesday, December 21, 1955 Tlie Yellow Card Of Mississippi MACON, Miss.—CP)—Mrs. Wiley Lentz will open a clean envelope this week and pull out a tattered, yellowed Christmas card, the same one she’s received every other Christmas for 18 years. A sister, Mrs. O. L. Turman of Laurel, Miss., first sent the card to Mrs. Lentz in 1937. Next year Mrs. Lentz decided to cut down on her budget. So she returned the old card to her sister with this greet ing: “We can’t afford new ones ’Cause times are just too hard So we send our best wishes On your old Christmas card.” The sisters have been exchang ing the old card with new verses ever since. Whatever the true story, it was from Bari that Nicholas’ fame spread. The day of his death Dec. 6 became a time for giving gifts and rejoicing. America’s early settlers are blamed for corrupting the Dutch pronounciation of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus. And so in this way, my children, Christ was born in Bethlehem.” But Christmas is more than the celebration of this event which happened long ago and far away. It is a present reality. Through the eyes of faith we see ourselves kneeling before the manger. We have come to adore our new-born King. Through the wonder of faith, the Christmas story becomes alive. The Christ Child is born in our hearts. The angels speak to us: “Behold I bring you tidings of great joy . . . For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord!” Our Bethlehem today is our Church and Sun day School. Let us go and take our children to worship our new-born King. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . , ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest fac tor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and sup port the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and ma terial support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
