Friday September 30, 1955 THE BATTALION Page 8 P O 11 T H O R T By RONNIE GREATHOUSE Battalion Sports Editor If the Battalion’s unguaranteed predictions hold true, this weekend’s games should end up like this: A&M over U of H TCU over Arkansas Kice over LSU In the game of the week, so far as A&M students are concerned, the Aggies try to trap the Univer sity of Houston’s powerful Coug- Football (Continued from Page 1) senior ball-handling wizard who completed 32 of 77 passes last sea son. The second quarter team is led by Quarterback Don Flynn, and is composed of mostly juniors. Houston’s first unit line aver ages about 202-pounds from end to end, while the Aggie’s starting line averages 193. Star halfback Donn Hargrove, injured before the Montana game may see action against the Cadets. With Har grove in the lineup Houston’s start ing backfield weighs in at 181 pounds. Meek has been experimenting with a backfield composed of Dick ey, and a trio of hard-driving full backs, Curley Johnson, Donnie Car away and Owen Mulholland, in an attempt to generate power to throw against A&M’s stout de fense. Georgia Tech over SMU USC over Texas Maryland over Baylor ars. The platoon-minded Cougars had an easy time of it in their op ener against little Montana, win ning 54-12. But, if A&M is as ag gressive as it was in thrashing highly touted LSU last week, the Cadets should be able to tame the Cougars by 14 points. Frogs Over Porkers TCU’s rampaging Horned Frogs and defending- SWC champion Ar kansas get the conference season underway at Fayetteville Satur day in what should be a thriller. Both squads are loaded with re turning lettennen. TCU has 26 lettermen off last year’s team, and Arkansas 22. The Froggies have n’t beaten Arkansas in Fayette ville since 1941, but this will be TCU’s year. TCU by 6 points. Rice will have the manpower, as well as home field, advantage over LSU’s scrappy Tigers. Word is out that the Owls will be the next SWC title-holder. This all adds up to a 12 point advantage for Rice. Tech Tough Georgia Tech, No. 3 in the na tion in this week’s press polls, should corral SMU’s Mustangs by 7 points. . USC should brand the listless Texas Longhorns by 13 points in spacious Los Angeles Coliseum in a night game. Baylor’s husky Bears tackle the nation’s No. 1 team at Waco Sat urday night. The Bears could pull an upset, but the Terps should win by at least 7 points. Third Game Today Byrne Beats Bums, 4-2 NEW YORK—(A 3 )—Tommy Byr ne, 35-year-old converted wildman who was discarded by four Amer ican League teams, baffled Brook lyn with five hits yesterday as the New York Yankees made it two straight over the Dodgers, 4-2, and took a commanding World Series lead. Byrne, often referred to as “that good-hitting pitcher,” ground salt into the Dodgers’ wounds by driv ing home the two winning runs with a line single past Billy Loes’ ear in the fourth inning. In sharp contrast to yesterday’s booming opener when five home runs sailed through the muggy air, the Yanks managed to win this one on eight singles, five of them bunched in the fourth inning. Four of the singles and all the Yankee runs came after two were out in the fourth. PARENTS of Texas Aggies . . BIG GUNS—Halfback Loyd Taylor (left) gets down-field protection from tackle Jack Powell (right). Both will be in the starting lineup for A&M tomorrow night.
