I Page 4 THE BATTALION Consolidated (Con tin nod from Page 2) school at the level of operations called for under the proposed bud get. (Indications are that the board will adopt a budget approximately comparable to that proposed and that a tight rein will be held on expenditures so that money can go to help pay off the deficit. The immediate problem to be solved, however, is the money owed by Sept.. 1—which is the matter to be taken up at the meeting tonight. —O— (The flurry of excitement over Consolidated’s main financial pro blem ..overshadowed the action taken by the City Council about quitting the job of assessing and collecting school taxes by Jan. 31, 1956. The action was presented to the school board by City Council man Joe Orr, who came to the budget hearing from the Council meeting that night.) Orr explained the Council’s feel ing that the school tax program was now large enough for the board to hire a full-time man as business manager. He also repeated City Manager Ran Boswell’s statement that the city would have to in crease its personnel to take care of the growing school tax program. The general reaction of the school board and of several of the citizens present at the budget hear ing was that the thing was dropped in their lap without warning. (The time allowed was also sharply de bated at the Council meeting.) Orr told the board that the Coun cil would listen to any reasons given and, given proper reasons why, might possibly withdraw its resolution. He also reminded the board that the Council had said several years ago that the program was only temporarily to be in the hands of the city. (Comment — in view of Con solidated’s present situation, some very proper reasons would seem to be around that should prevail on the City Council to reconsider its action.)
