Thursday, June 2, 1955 THE BATTALION Page 5 ies Lose to Arizona (Continued from Page 1) quickly stole second base to put him in scoring position. Lee fanned Joe Boring to quelch the rally, and and the game. Munday pitched masterful seven- hit ball, striking out six and issu ing but one free pass. Jerry Nel son, senior righthander, shut out the Wildcats for the first time in more than 95 games Tuesday night. Lefty Joe Hardgrove, Nelson and Munday combined their talents to hand-cuff Arizona’s highly touted batters for 21 consecutive frames, longest in its last three seasons of' play, including the NCAA national championship journey. Senior rightfielder Fred Ablon led A&M at the plate with a plump .385 average in the three-game series. He gathered the Cadets only extra base hits with two booming doubles off the 340-foot left field fence. Ablon also scored one run and batted in one run. ® John Hoyle, sophomore first baseman, hit .273 to rank second to Ablon in Aggie stick-work. He got in on all three of A&M’s double plays in the series as the cohesive Aggie infield ended up with 27 double plays in 27 season games. A walk to 23-year-old catcher Sam Zivkovich of Duluth, Minn, in the top of the first went to no avail for Arizona, as Munday re tired the next two batters easily. A&M started things off with a bang in its half of the first. Ablon sent splinters flying off the top of the left field wall for a double, and Stockton followed him with a walk. Rincon bore down to retire Byrd, Joe Schero and Jimmy Wil liams in order, however, and end the threat. Both clubs went down one-two- three in the second inning. Arizo na’s 24-year-old shortstop, Rudy Castro, led off the top of the third with a single and got as far as third base before Munday retired the side. Arizona threatened again in the fourth after one out. Don Gile reached first on an error, trotted to second on a single by third base- man Craig Sorensen, but died there as Tom Wright went down swing ing for the third out. The Aggies quickly pushed Rin con into hot water in the fifth with singles by Boring and Charlie Puls leading off the inning. KINGS MEN TOILETRIES - AVAILABLE AT STORES EVERYWHERE reached third on Puls’ one-baser, and Puls moved to second on Hoyle’s ground out. Rincon again proved double-tough in the pinch, getting Munday on strikes and Ab lon on a fly to deep right. Arizona managed to shove Lee Myers as far as second base in the eighth after two outs on a sin gle by first sacker Russ Gragg. Munday cut 6-5, 240-pound Gile down swinging on a slider to call a halt to the Wildcat run making effort. The eighth inning proved to be only the lull before the storm, as Arizona eased across two runs in the ninth to take a 2-0 lead. Leftfielder Ted Lazovich bloop- ed a “Texas Leaguer” over second base to start the inning off. Soren sen reached first on an error. Both runners moved up on a saci'ifice bunt by Wright. Carl Thomas, 6-5, 240-pound pitcher from Minneapolis, Minn., who lost Tuesday night’s contest, batted for Castro and slammed a long fly to center that allowed La zovich to score from third with Arizona’s first run. Rincon, who was the only Wild cat with more than one safety for the night, drove in what proved to be the winning tally with a solid single to left center field. Myers struck out to end the uprising. “I don’t care if they didn’t win,” one fan was overheard to say as he ambled out of the grandstands, “those Aggies are the fightinest bunch of boys I’ve ever watched, and I’d pay money to see them any day.” Box Scores \A&M Senior Given Engineer Award Robert Irvin Beaver has been awarded A&M’s industrial engi neering award of $25.
