The Fish beat Wharton junior college 2-1 Saturday on Jim Wright’s one- hitter. Game time today is 3 p.m. at the yarsity diamond. The Yearlings beat the Freshmen 5-0 in Austin earlier in the season. In previous appearances, Newton has struck out 16, 12 and 14. He was the loser in the first Short horn game, but didn’t give up an earned run. There were some definite indi cations that things might not be as bad as they appeared. Nothing definite will be known until en rollment time next September, however, since A&M’s power to make a binding contract with high school athletes through the letter of intent is gone. Paul (Bear) Bryant, Aggie head coach and athletic director, has an nounced that 12 to 15 gridders, freed from Aggie letters of intent, have assured him they will come here despite the action of the fac ulty committee. Bryant was out of town yester day, having gone to Dallas for the A&M-SMU baseball game. He was due to be in Austin today for the game with Texas. The players include guard Wins ton LaFleur and back Jackie Ha- thorn of Port Neches, tackles A. A. Crews of Nederland, James Be noit of Port Arthur Bishop Byrne, John Drake of Houston La mar, ends Don Usry of Cleburne, David Williams of Houston Lamar and Jodie Watson of Pasadena, and linebacker Dick Goff of Houston Lamar. LaFleur, Hathorn, Crews, Benoti and Usry made all-state teams. Usry also made the all-American high school eleven. In addition to much debate on the rights and wrongs <?f the fac ulty committee’s decision at Hous ton, there were published reports that tlie NCAA might step in fot a look of its own. C. H. Groneman, chairman of the Athletic council, and A&M’s member of the faculty committee told The Battalion last night that the committe had received “no of ficial action” from the national body. “There’s always supposi tion,” he said. * While specific details of the Bobby Manning and Tom Sestak cases were not revealed at Hous ton, Groneman told The Battalion that the two had admitted receiv ing cash payoffs from Cx-students. Affidavits from the boys signed before notary public admitting this were presented at the Houston meeting, said Groneman. There were unconfirmed reports the affidavits may have been pi-ompted by payoffs from other confei’ence members, Groneman said, “Of course, the assumption is that when a boy turns down an offer from onfe school to accept that of a second, the second school must have made him a better ofc* fer. “We don’t know that until we (See FOOTBALL, Page 5) BOOKS WANTED At Student Co-op Store ECONOMICS 203 ANIMAL HUSBANDRY 107 ANIMAL HUSBANDRY 303 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 305 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 307 ENGINEERING DRAWING 105 CHEMISTRY 101-102 LOOK IN EACH DAILY BATTALION FOR BOOK WANTED LIST STUDENT CO-OP STORE Phone 4-4U4 — College Station ____ rc'-' --i SI LVERWARE SERVICE For SIXI by the world’s largest Silversmiths 6 FORKS WHEN YOU PURCHASE •%, ONE OF THESE lane CEDAR CHESTS 6 SPOONS 6 SOUP SPOONS| O' SERVING SPOON 1 Your choice of finish: Pearl Gray Mahogany, No. 3158 as shown; or Blond Oak No. 3089- Silverware Set at no extra cost. 59 95 SERVING KNIFE INCLUDES SILVER SET AT NO EXTRA COST t Your choice of finish: Blond Oak IN'o. 3088 as shown; Seafoam Mahogany, No. 3035, PeaxI Gray Mahogany, No. 3159—* i Plus Towel Set at no extra co$t» No. 3044 —Richly finished genuine Mahogany.
