Fireballing righthander Jerry Nelson, the only conference hurler to hold an edge over SMU’s Tommy Bowers, is Coach Beau Bell’s choice to shoulder the Aggies champion ship hopes. “I’ve chosen Nelson to pitch— and to win,” said Bell. “I’m quite confident that Jerry can beat SMU.” Joe Hardgrove, A&M’s ace twirl- er, may not be available for mound duty in Monday’s clash, according to Coach Bell. Hardgrove pulled a muscle in his pitching arm in Tuesday’s game with Rice. Nelson brings a 4-1 conference record into the Pony game, and has steadily improyed since early sea son. He will probably be opposed by Bowers, the Mustang’s ace who sports eight wins and one loss. Bowers’ lone defeat came at the hands of A&M and Nelson here two weeks ago. Of the three meetings between Nelson and Bow ers, dating back to 1953, Nelson has emerged victorious twice. In 1953 Bowers was shelled from the Kyle field mound in a stunning 14-5 upset of the Methodists, with Nelson taking credit for the win. Last year at Dallas the Mustang ace edged Nelson in a thrilling 1-0 duel. Nelson is not without support, however, as the Aggie squad boasts five players batting over .300 in league games. A&M’s tightly woven infield has chalked-up 21 double plays and one triple play in 22 games. Station WTAW will broadcast both the SMU game Monday and Xho 'gli-mc With" TexiTS' 'Ttidsday:'' Monday’s probable starters are: SMU McKinstry, cf Radcliff, 3b Brown, 2b Payne, lb Boggan, ss Golden, rf Carter, If Bush, c Bowers, p A&M Ablon, rf Stockton, cf Byrd, If Schero, 3b Williams, c Boring, ss Puls, 2b Hoyle, lb Nelson, p Ags Start Title The advance forces of A&M’s freshman and varsity track teams compete this afternoon at Houston in the kickoff of the Southwest conference meet. Beaten 40 points by Texas last year at Waco after winning the crown six of the seven previous years, the varsity—-38 strong—is due to make things closer this weekend. The Longhorns are still heavy favorites, however, largely on the basis of their great sprint contingent. Last year, Texas took four of Bryant, Groneman Go To Houston Paul (Bear) Bryant, A&M ath letic director, and Chris Groneman, chairman of the Athletic council, are in Houston today for the South- w e s t conference administrative meetings. Groneman is A&M’s representa tive to the SWC faculty committee, which is due to discuss Aggie re cruiting violations. Official an nouncement of faculty committee action will be made at a press con ference at noon Saturday in the Rice hotel. Hand Balls & Handball Gloves STUDENT CO-OP STOKE the five places in the 100-yard dash, all five in the 220 and won the sprint relay. They figure to do the same this year, though SMU’s Buddy Goode could take points away in the sprints. A&M, to have a chance for an upset, must dominate the field events. Aggies Tom Bonorden, Herman Johnson and Fritzie Con- nally are top choices in the shot, discus and high jump, but Texas has Charles Reiifroe in the javelin and Jerry House in the broad jump. James Hollingsworth and Winton Thomas are other good first place bets. Hollingsworth, fifth last year, has times of 14.0 and 14.2 in the high hurdles, best in the SWC. REMINGTON’S NEW 22 SHORTS ROCKETS Not for years has a .22 cartridge caused so much excitement and interest as the New Remington ROCKETS. They have extra speed, you will know it when you hear the sharp crack, as the special composition bul let leaves the muzzle at 1600 ft. per second. GET THESE NEW .22 SHELLS AT — Hillcrest Hardware Thomas has done 13-7-in the pole vault and could take first if Rice’s Stephen James has a bad day. James has cleared 13-11, better than the conference record of 13-10%. In the freshman meet, being held for the first time, the Aggies should battle the Texas and Baylor frosh for the title, with the Short horns favored because of two wins over the Fish. A&M’s Emmett Smallwood, whose 9.6 100 and 22.8 low hurdles are the best in the SWC freshman ranks, will pace the 33-man Fish squad.
