1 'W'" "1 i Page 4 THE BATTALION Friday, May 6, 1955 Cadets Rally, Last Event Held agles At Denton Key to Victory DENTON, May 5—UP)—A&M came from behind in the last three events to nip North Texas State by a 65-58 margin in a triangular track meet here last night. Abilene Christian, the third team, scored 47 points. The Aggies gained a lead in the 220-yard low hurdles as they scored four points while North Texas scored none. Then the Cadets grabbed seven points in the high jump to three for NTS for a 62-58 margin going into the final event, the mile relay. The NTS relay team was the favorite entering the race, and appeared to be going to make good, as Jimmy Weaver tried to move into first place on the back side of the first lap. As Weaver stretched out for the lead, he pulled a leg muscle, and from there on, it was a battle between ACC and A&M for the lead. Abilene took the race, but A&M held on for second and a victory in the meet. In the feature event of the night, the Eagle foursome nipped ACC’s sprint relay team by about two yards with a 41.3. Boyd Dollar of NTS and ACC’s Bobby Morrow hooked up in an anchor lap duel, but Dollar held on to win. A&M’s Tom Bonorden, after throwing- 54-4 with Herman John son in practice this week, hit 54- 3 7/8, the best of his career and best in the conference since Dar- row Hooper. Hooper holds the SWC record at 55-5 y 2 . Johnson’s 51-9 1/8 took second as the Cadets swept the four places in the shot. James Hollingsworth turned in another brilliant high hurdles race, running a 14.2 to beat out Ken Kelley of NTS. Hollingsworth was second to ACC’s Mack Clark in the lows, as Clark turned in a 23.5. Morrow, ACC’s great sprint star, easily won the dashes, running the Baseball (Continued from Page 3) gled and Byrd doubled, sending McDaniel out in favor of Hill. The Frogs got back one run in the seventh on a walk to Mayfield and White’s second of two triples. A&M’s tw r o insurance runs in the eighth assured Hardgrove of his win. Ablon singled, Stockton walked, and Byrd was safe on an error, loading the bases. Schero forced Ablon at the plate, but Williams scored two with his sharp single to left. 100 in 9.5 and the 220 in 21.6. A special event of the meet was a 440-yard shot put relay, with each man running 110 yards with a shot instead of a baton. The Eagles won it in 58.8. Only other A&M first places were won by Winton Thomas, Bill Cocke and Fritzie Connally. Tho mas took the pole vault with 13-0, Cocke the two-mile in 9:43.6. Con nally tied Kelly in the high jump at 6-4. The summaries: Discus: 1) Bob Burch, NTS, 159-5%; 2) Tom Bonorden, Ags, 14<;-6 ; 3) Herman Johnson, Ags, 144-11% ; 4) Lee Newman, Ags, 144-514. Pitchers Murray Trimble, Cam Castleman and Jimmy Wright gave up only two hits, both singles, to the Ramblers. Trimble, the starter, retired the first nine batters to face him, then lost his control in the fourth, giv ing up all the Allen runs on five walks, one hit,*hnd a costly throw ing error by shortstop Don Smith. Right-hander Earl Burchfield went the route for Allen, and was touched for eight hits, only three of them solid. He struck out five and didn’t walk anyone. Burchfield retired 12 men in a row from the fourth to the eighth innings. The victory gives the Fish a 4-5 record after five consecutive losses. It was their second in three games with Allen. Conrad and third baseman Gor don Maxwell were the only Fresh men with two hits. Maxwell’s triple in the eighth brought home pinch- hitters Phil Beeson and Jolm Can trell with vital runs. Third baseman Ronnie Waller got Allen’s only solid hit, a run scoring single in the fourth. Short stop Mark Mosely beat out an in field scratcher in the seventh. The Fish opened the scoring in the second. Conrad beat out an in field hit, stole second, went to third on Jim Smotherman’s ground-out and scored when catcher Chebo Gongora stepped out of the box before a pitch reached the plate. Then Smith threw wide of second on a ground ball, and three runs- scored as the ball rolled into right field. Waller’s single past third scored the other run. Dennis Ham’s infield single in the third produced the last Fish runner until Beeson, hitting for Castleman in the eighth, got on on an error. Cantrell singled to left, then Maxwell lofted a drive over the centerfielder’s head that rolled to the fence and scored Beeson and Cantrell. Dudley then grounded a ball to Williams who threw home too late trying to get Maxwell, who tied the game 4-4. With two out in the last of the ninth, Williams booted Wright’s ground ball, but Burchfield got Dick Johnson on a floating pop up that Williams caught in short right-center. Wright hit Waller with a pitch in the Allen 10th, then walked Stan Bullock, but struck out the next two batters to retire the side. After Ham’s ground out, in the last of the 10th, Maxwell drove a ball that Biskup caught just in front of the center field fence. Then Dudley got his first hit of the day, a ground single to left. He stole second and took third on Burchfield’s only wild pitch. Conrad slapped a high bounder to the left of second that Mosely could not field in time, and Dudley scor ed.
