Main Brayn Fish Second HP rii to 1 exas tn Austin AUSTIN, May 5—UP) — A well-balanced Texas freshman track team was too strong for the freshman teams of A&M and Rice, and Victoria junior college, to win a four-way meet here yesterday. Texas totaled 71 points in win ning seven first places to out-point A&M, who came in second with 46 %. Victoria, rated among the powers in junior college circles, came in third with 28 %, while Rice finished fourth with 15 % points. Boasting one of the top field teams in the state, the Shorthorns took four out of five events there. The only field event in which they failed to place first was the high jump, where A&M had three clear the winning mark. Rice also had a man place in the tie for first. Aggies Bob Carter, James Fund- ling and Joe Greenwood all scaled the bar at 5-10% and almost gave the Fish a clean sweep. Rice’s James Charnquist made the jump to spoil a clean victory. Walter McNew of Texas barely edged out A&M’s Bill McFadden in the mile run and only a desper ate spurt gave him a two-yard victory. McNew’s time was 4:31.3, while McFadden was timed at one- half a second slower. A&M’s Emmett Smallwood easily took the 220-yard low hurdles with a 23.7 clocking, while the Aggies’ Sam Nave took the high hurdles with 15.3. The only other A&M winner was Ed Willis, who tied Charnquist in the pole vault at 11-%. Summary: 440-relay—1. Victoria (Evans, Hutchin son, Morgan, Reuter) 42.9; 2. The Aggies will pitch Jerry Nelson against Tommy Hill in today’s game, starting at 2:30 p.m. Hardgrove recorded his seventh win of the year and sixth league victory without a loss, but it wasn’t smooth sailing. The stubborn Frogs stayed in the game until the eighth and threatened in the ninth until a double play A&M’s second—ended the game. Pitching in his home town, Hardgrove was touched for 10 hits.. The six runs is the most any team has scored off him this year. He walked four and fanned only two, but was still the master all the way. TCU bunched two hits for two runs in the second, and three more hits in the fifth produced a couple of runs. Hardgrove gave up single runs in the third and sev enth. The Aggies shelled Bob Mc Daniel and Hill for 17 hits and took advantage' of six Frog bobbles afield to win their eighth SWC game of the year against two losses—the same record SMU car ries into its game with Texas at Dallas today. Fred Ablon’s triple to right-cen ter with two on in the sixth was the big blow for A&M. It came with two out and the Aggies be hind. The little right fielder had three for five. Captain Les Byrd also had three hits, while Jimmy Williams, all- SWC catcher, drove in three big runs with two timely singles. The Aggies chased McDaniel in the sixth during a four run rally. Hill came in to retire the side. He gave up two runs in the eighth on Ablon’s single, a walk to John Stockton and Williams’ single. A&M scored first in the second inning. Joe Schero singled, took second on ,an error and scored on Williams’ single. Beau Bell’s Ca dets added two in the third on con secutive singles by Ablon, Stockton and Byrd, and Schero’s fielder’s choice. The Frogs scored two in the sec ond on Jim Mayfield’s single, an error on Bob White’s grounder, a single by Larry Roseborough, a walk to Don Holland, and Tommy Rogers’ grounder. TCU tied the count with A1 Paschal’s fluke hom er in the third on what would have been a double in most ball-parks. His liner down the third-base line veered over a cliff behind the left- field line. TCU went ahead by two in the fifth. Paschal walked, Charles Quick doubled, and Mayfield and White singled. A&M’s four runs in the sixth came with two out. Boring got life on an error, and Charlie Puls was hit by a pitched ball. Boring took third on a wild pitch and scored on John Hoyle’s infield grounder. Hardgrove then singled, and Ablon scored two with his triple. McDaniel balked to score Ablon, and the spurt was over, but A&M still threatened when Stockton sin- (See BASEBALL, Page 4) • BOX SUOItK A&M (9) AB U H o A E Ablon, rf . . 5 2 3 0 0 0 Stockton, cf 5 2 2 6 1 0 Byrd, If ... 6 1 3 4 0 0 Schero, 3b 5 1 1 1 1 1 Williams, c 4 0 2 5 0 0 Boring, ss 5 1 1 1 4 1 Puls, 2b ... 4 0 2 4 4 0 Hoyle, lb . . 5 1 2 6 0 0 Hardgrove, p 4 1 1 0 1 0 TOTALS . . 43 9 17 27 12 2 TCU <«> AB R H O A E Paschal, ss 4 2 1 6 5 0 Quick, 2b . . 6 1 1 5 3 0 Mattinson, If 5 0 1 0 0 0 Mayfield, lb 4 2 3 9 1 1 White, cf 1 3 2 1 2 Roseborough, C .... 4 0 1 2 1 1 Holland, 3b 2 O 0 0 0 0 Spencer, 3b 1 0 0 0 0 0 Rogers, rf . 3 0 0 3 1 0 McDaniel, p 2 0 0 0 2 0 Hill, p .... 2 0 0 0 3 0 TOTALS ... 37 6 10 27 10 6 A & M . . . 012 004 020— -9 T C U . . . 021 020 100— 6 —Ablon 2, Schero, Williams 3, Hoyle, Paschal, Mattinson, White 2, Roseborough. 2B —Byrd, Quick. 3B—Ablon, White 2 HR—Paschal. A Chemical Spills C Armor 9-1 in Softball A chemical pasted C armor, 9-1, behind the three - hit pitching of John Channing last night, and gained the right to face C antiaircraft artillery in the semi-final round of upperclassmen softball. Centerfielder Julius Jahns star ted the scoring by smashing a homer with Barry Hart on base to put the chemical men in front early, 2-0. The tank men scored their only run in the bottom of the first as Howard Andrew singled and scor ed on errors by third baseman Jerry Schwartz and shortstop Del- mar Harper. C armor couldn’t touch Channing after that, except for Leroy Campbell’s hit in the fifth and pitcher Ed Dardaganian’s base knock in the sixth. The winners used three walks by Dardaganian in the second and a hit batsman to score their third tally. Schwartz doubled in two more runs in the fourth after Jahns had singled and Channing had reached first safely on a bunt- single. Harper walked to lead off the sixth, Schwartz was safe on a first circuit blast of the season fielder’s choice and Channing help- with Johnny Smith on base.
