r Page 4 THE BATTALION Wednesday, January 19, 1955 Ags Split Ooubleheader O’Neal Held to 13 Owls Upset TCU 73-63 in Houston HOUSTON, Jan. 19—UP>—-Rice stopped Texas Christian’s eight game winning streak and handed the Progs their first Southwest conference basketball defeat, 73-63, before 4,000 here last night. Rice led most of the way. TCU held the lead for the last time at 47-46 with 12 minutes left in the game, but Terry Telligman hit a pair of free throws and a two- hander off the pivot while Bobby Bra shear was making a pair of free throws to pull Rice from behind and into a 52-47 lead. TCU never got within three points the rest of the way. TCU lost the Southwest confer ence scoring leader, Dick O’Neal with 7:49 remaining. O’Neal was held to 13 points by the close guarding of Telligman and Joe Durrenberger. It was the lowest total of O’Neal’s career as a fi'esh- man and a sophomore. Telligman, hitting 12 free throws, contributed 26 points, second high est of his career, while Durren berger had 18. Fred Woods’ 15 rebounds were instrumental in the Rice victory. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands 14 times. Rice hit 40.3 per cent of its field goal attempts with 25 of 62. TCU made the same number of baskets on 86 attempts for a 29 per cent scoring average. Rice held a 13-point lead mid way of the first half but TCU pulled ahead to hold a 33-32 half time lead. Mehaffey Hits 31; BU Wins 89-77 BY JERRY WIZIG Battalion Sports Editor Sophomore George Mehaffey put on A&M’s best indi vidual show of the season but the Cadets bowed to Baylor 89-77 in Waco last night in a rough, brawling Southwest conference basketball game. Mehaffey slipped through 31 points and grabbed 18 re bounds as A&M hit 43 per cent of its shots, but the Bears made a phenomenal 41 of 56 free throws in the wild battle, played before a capacity crowd of 3,000. Murray Bailey led Baylor with 30 points, including 16 of 20 free throws, but 6-5 soph Jerry Mallett contributed 25 important rebounds and 24 points, 18 in the second half, to play Jhe key role. Both clubs scored 24 field goals and rebounds were only 56-51 in Baylor’s favor. Fifty-five personal fouls were called—31 on the Ag gies, 24 on Baylor. Three of the Aggie starters—Roger Harvey, Bill Brophy and Don Bilbrey—fouled out, along with John Henry. Pat McCrory and Mehaffey had four personals. CHS Drops Waller Twice A&M Consolidated’s A and B teams swept a twin-bill from Wal ler, 58-35 and 35-27 last night - in Tiger gym. The win gives the Tigers a 2-1 record in district 25-A standings, and a 9-6 record over the season. Consolidated led all the way in both contests. Norman Floeck was the big man in the Tiger attack with 24 points on eight field goals and eight free throws. J. C. Car- roll was second in scoring with 9 points. Bobby Potts sank 16 points to lead the Tiger B team. Consolidated’s A team piled up a 33-18 half time margin, while the B team led 17-11 at the mid way point. He won two games against the Braves in 1948 but lost two in the 1954 classic against the Giants. The Aggies led most of the first half and were ahead 44-43 at its end on Brophy’s layup with 15 seconds left. Brophy’s 14 and Me- haffey’s 18 points: sparked the Ca dets, as they worked their plays beautifully and sank 47 per cent of their shots. But Harvey had four personals and Bilbrey, McCrory and Forten berry three each at the half as Bailey’s 20 points kept the Bears in the game. A&M had jumped into a 7-0 lead and led 30-21 with 12 minutes gone before Mallet, Bailey and guard Ken Morgan pull ed BU ahead, 41-40. Mallett played the pivot in the second half, with 6-8 center Don Dickson at a forward, and Baylor pulled into a 63-54 lead 6:45 deep. Mallett dunked in 8 points in the spree and dominated the back- boards. Fortenberry and Brophy pulled A&M up to 60-65, but the Bears pulled ahead 73-63 with eight min utes left and went into a ball- control game in the last six min utes. Baylor twice led by 13 in the last four minutes. The loss drops the Aggie SWC mark to 1-3 and the season reed’d to 3-11. A&M plays LSU here Thursday night and TCU here Sat urday night. Officials: McAllistor and Hayes. ’MURAL HIGHLIGHTS Fish Halt Cub Rally, Win 72-71 Almost blowing: a 10 point lead in the last three and a half minutes, the Aggie Fish hung on to down Baylor’s Cub’s 72-71 last night in a prelude to the A&M-BU vnrsity game. Fifty-six personal fouls were called as four Fish and three Cubs fouled out. Leading 35-29 at the half, the Fish, paced by Carter Williams, Ted Dockery and Willard Hutto, built a 64-49 lead with 5:55 re maining. Williams did a fine job relieving Fritzie Connally, who was pulled out after drawing four per sonals. The Cubs, playing a full-court press, started cutting down a CO SO deficit. Guard Ethan Jackson, a 5-9 speedster, and center Tom Kelley made it 70-68 with 45 sec onds remaining. Then Bryan Sutherlin made two free throws for the Fish with 25 seconds left to ice the game. Kelley made another free shot and forward Larry Barnes dunked two more for the Cubs as he was fouled as the buzzer sounded. Cub guard Jim Montero scored 20 points before fouling out. PRAYERS HELP WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Prayers can help a wrestler, says the cap tain of the Waynesburg college wrestling team. He should know because he’s an ordained minister although still an undergraduate. The Rev. Ray Carlson, appointed captain of the 1954-55 team, wres tles at 177 pounds. In the past three seasons he lost only one match, winning 13 by falls and seven by decisions. Before each match the Rev. Capt. Carlson says a brief prayer. In addition to his college studies he’s pastor of the nearby Jefferson Methodist church. In other games, C infantry won over B field artillery on penetra tions; squadron 21 beat squadron 2 on penetrations; and A chemical corps won over the corps staff by forfeit. Jerry Roach dunked 20 points to pace squadron 19 to an easy 40-0 win over B field artillery in fresh men basketball. Henry Gonzales scored 16 points to lead C field artillery to a 39-8 victory over squadron 8; Joe Sim mons sank six points to help B engineers to a 17-11 victory over squadron 10; Jack Heald rang up nine points as squadron 1 lost to A signal corps 21-14; Bill Fergu- sion tallied four points for squad ron 12 as they lost to a anti-air craft artillery, 11-8.
