Family Favorites
By Mrs. Deaner Woodruff
(Ed. note: Mrs. Woodruff and her husband are both
from Dallas, but they will reside in Fort Worth during the
summer after Deaner graduates from A&M in June, re
ceiving a degree in Building Products and Marketing. Mrs.
Woodruff is completing her degree in education, by corres
pondence, from Baylor.
Mrs. Woodruff has' prepared one of the favorite meals
of her household. Steak, squash, potatoes, divinity salad,
hot bread, lemon pie and coffee make up the meal.)
STEAK
My husband usually cooks the
meat on our little charcoal broiler.
We get a generous cut of round
steak which allows plenty for two.
SQUASH
We learned to enjoy squash
cooked by my mother’s recipe.
6-8 medium squash, thinly
sliced
onion, diced
2 tablespoons fat
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup water
Salt and pepper
Brown the onions in fat; slice
squash into pan with onions. Cover
with water, then add sugar. Cook
until tender, then mash adding salt
and pepper. Cover until ready to
serve.
BOILED POTATOES
We like boiled new potatoes in
melted butter seasoned with salt
and pepper and sprinkled with par
sley.
DIVINITY SALAD
Deaner’s favorite salad is an old
Georgian recipe of divinity salad.
36 marshmallows
1 large can of chunk pineapple
1 cup of chopped nuts
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons of sugar
2 tablespoons of vinegar
% teaspoon of spit
1 pint of whipping cream
Cube the marshmallows and add
with the can of pineapple and cup
mf nuts. Prepare dressing by beat
ing the yolks of 2 eggs and mix
ing with 2 tablespoons of sugar,
2 tablespoons of vinegar and %
^teaspoon of salt. Cook in double
boiler until thick. Then cool and
add one pint of whipped whipping-
cream. Pour on salad and mix.
I usually serve hot bread Avith
this meal and serve coffee.
LEMON PIE
1 tall can Carnation milk
1 cup sugar
1 package lemon jello
Chill mixing bowl and chill milk.
Pour jello and sugar into bowl,
slowly adding milk while beating.
, Turn rotator to a medium speed
and beat until thick. Then pour
into graham cracker crust and chill
in the refrigerator.
