Thursday, December 23, 1954 THE BATTALION Page 3 Lincoln-Livingston Tilt Decides State Champs Football fans of this area have an opportunity to witness a state championship game when the Col lege Station Lincoln High school meets Livingston High school at 8 p.m. Thursday on the A&M Con solidated football field. With the Negro Class A title at stake, a large turnout is expect- Aggie-Ex Gets National Loop Rookie of Year NEW YORK—(A 5 )—Wally Moon, the kid who filled a man’s job for the St. Louis Cardinals, is the Na tional League Rookie of the Year. ♦The 24-year-old outfielder was put on the spot from the start by the Cards, who two days before the season opened decided the time had come to replace their long time right fielder, Enos Slaugh ter. Moon was the lad they picked to take over. He rose to the occasion from the stai't, slamming a home run as leadoff man in the opening game. He kept up that kind of perform ance all season, finishing with 293 hits, scoring 106 runs and batting a respectable .304. He collected 17 of 24 first-place votes in the balloting by the Base ball Writers’ Assn, of America. The other seven votes were dis tributed among three other yearl ings with Ernie Banks, Chicago Eubs’ shortstop, the runner-up with four of them. Two Milwaukee first-year men, pitcher Gene Conley and outfielder Tlank Aaron, finished three, four. ed and a reserved section will be available for white fans. Advance tickets to the game are priced at $1 for adults and 50 cents for students and may be purchased at the Lincoln High school, A&M Consolidated High school, Walton grocery and Tay lor’s Service station in Bryan. Gate prices for tickets will be $1.10 for adults and 60 cents for students and refreshments will be sold. This game will close out football action in this area until next year. Blue-Gray Contest Offers Many Stars MONTGOMERY, Ala.—<A>> — A fancy collection of college backs and ends whose combined efforts piled up more than five miles of yardage this season will perform here Christmas Day in the Blue- Gray gridiron show. And unless they fall far below their proven efficiency, the All- Stars from the North and South will put on a passing and running demonstration rivaling anything witnessed before in the 16-year history of the traditionally wide- open game. The intersectional contest will be televised NBC for the first time, and that alone is an induce ment for the 48 visiting players to put on the most spectacular per formance they know how. Collectively, the vengeful Yankee backs arid flankmen and their cus tomarily victorious Southern rivals accounted for more than 8,$00 yards in passing, rushing and pass receiving this year.
