Thursday, December 2, 1954 THE BATTALION Page 3 12th Man Bowl Teams Work On Offense Army and air force teams spent their second workout period stress ing football fundamentals in pre paration for the 12th Man Bowl game Dec. 16. Bennie Sinclair, coach of the army squad, had his team spend ing most of its time on offensive plays. Sinclair’s assistants for the game will be Don Watson, Law rence Winkler and Ronald Robbins. “The boys look good, despite the fact that they haven’t worked out,” said Sinclair. In the opposing camp, air force coach Elwood Kettler also sent his charges through a brisk offensive drill. His team assistants ai’e Billy Huddleston, Jack Pardee, Henry Clark and Bill Schroeder. “We haven’t decided on any de fense yet,” said Kettler, and added, “We have some promising players.” The teams will use only one de fense during the game. Both squads have about 60 players, but that number will be trimmed down to Ted Atkinson rode his first win ner on May 18, 1938 at Beulah Park in Ohio. The horse’s name was Musical Jack. about 30 before the game. Players will work out in shorts until Dec. 13. Ags Open with U of H in Gym Inaugural HEAD MAN—John Floyd opens his fifth season as A&M’s head basketball coach tonight when his varsity meets the University of Houston. He played and was an assistant coach at Oklahoma A&M under Hank Iba. A&M kicks off its 43rd basket ball season tonight in its new 8,500 seat field house, sending a green 12-man squad against the season ed University of Houston Cougars at 8 p.m. The contest is the official open ing game for the G. Rollie White coliseum. No official ceremonies are planned. Coach John Floyd, after sending his team through an hour and a half drill yesterday, said, “We’ve improved 100 per cent since last Saturday. Before that, we simply wasted our time. Right now, they’re looking good.” Floyd announced this starting lineup for the Cadets — George Mehaffey, a 6-4 sophomore, at center; Bill Brophy, 6-3 junior, and Bob Gattis, 6-314 soph, at for wards; co-captains Pat McCrory, 6-0 senior, and John Fortenberry, 6-214 junior, at guards. McCrory and Fortenberry are the only lettermen 6n the squad. McCrory is the only senior. TO TW d Boldebuck scored 1,103 points in two seasons at Nebraska Wesle yan, then transferred to Houston last year and was held out. He and 6-4 forward Jim Hatton, a two-year letterman, will play the pivots in the Cougar tandem post offense. Houston’s other three starters also are lettermen. They are 6-2 Jack Foster at the other forward, and Jackie Bell and Lupe Lopez, both 5-11, at guards. Forward Don Bilbrey, 6^314 ju nior, and guard Roger Harvey, 5-11 soph, are the top reserves for the Aggies. The varsity defeated the Fresh men 67-52 in a warmup game Mon day night.
