Coach Art Adamson announced re cently. The swimming ace attended A<£M Consolidated high school the past year. He currently holds the 100-meter freestyle record of 58 and 4/10 seconds. Merino won both the 40 and 100- yard freestyle events in the state high school swimming meet here last spring wnth a time of :18.5 in the 40 and :53.2 in the 100. The 40-yard time is a pool record at the P. L. Downs, jr., natatorium. The 5-8, 170-pound Merino mi grated to Consolidated a year ago to be under the expert coaching of Aggie Mentor Adamson. He swam this summer for the College Sta tion city tank team in various meets. Adamson calls the Peru boy one of the best prospects he has had here since Davey Green of Dallas, current holder of the A&M pool record of :52.2 in the 100-yard freestyle. Merino will represent Peru in the Pan American games at Mexico City in August, 1955, and also will try out for the 1956 Olympic games from Peru. UNDEFEATED, UNTIED The Aggies have had three un defeated, untied seasons in foot ball. They were in 1917, 1919, and 1939. Coaches were Dana X. Bi ble for the first two years, and Homer Norton for the last year. ATHLETIC COUNCIL ' * A&M sports are ruled over by an athletic council composed of five faculty and staff members. They are Chris H. Groneman, chairman, Fred Benson, P. B. Goode, J. C. Miller, and J. J. Woolket. Since 1893 Team Began As ‘Farmers 9 Texas Aggie football history be gan in 1893 when the Maroon and White team was organized but no games with out-of-town teams w’ere played. In 1894 the Aggies, then the Farmers, played road games including the first of the traditional battles with the Uni versity of Texas Longhorns, then the Varsity. The late Dean Eme ritus Charles Puryear, who had joined the faculty in 1888, was the first manager and one of those responsible for football being es tablished at the college. Puryear died at his campus home in July, 1940, living long enough to see his Aggies win a National Champion ship in 1939. The Aggies played no out-of- town games in 1895 but resumed such a schedule in 1896 and have continued to do so ever since. The Champs The Aggies’ first undefeated sea son was 1902, a year in which the Cadets won seven and tied two. A&M was also champion of Texas in 1909 and 1910, but in 1910 there was a 0-5 loss to Arkansas, and TCU held the 1909 machine to a scoreless tie. The 1912 team was hailed as “Champion of the South” in spite of a 10-13 loss to Kansas State. A&M was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic association from the time of its founding until the Southwest Athletic conference was formed in 1914 and is a re maining charter member of that organization along with the Uni versity of Texas, University of Arkansas, Rice Institute, and Bay lor University. Southern Metho dist University was admitted when Oklahoma dropped out and Texas Christian University took the place vacated by Oklahoma A&M. Texas A&M has won the cham pionship of the conference 7% times, taking the title in 1917, 1919, 1921, 1925, 1927, 1939, was co champion with SMU in 1940, and won again in 1941. In 1939 the Aggies were rated as National Champions. In 1940 Texas University broke a 19-game winning streak and cost them their only loss for that year. In 59 seasons of gridiron compe tition, the Texas Aggies have met 79 teams from 24 states for an all time record of 309 games won, 169 games lost and 37 ties. A&M has scored 9,185 points to 4,314 for all its opponents. > Has The Edge A&M has the edge on all oppo nents which have been played a number of times with the exception of Centenary, University of Okla homa, Arkansas and the Univer sity of Texas. Centenary has six of nine games and Oklahoma holds a 7-5 edge over the Aggies.
