Page 3 THE BATTALION Thursday, July 29, 1954 Club Discusses Civil Defense Members of the Bryan-College Station Business and Professional Women’s club met Tuesday night for a dinner at The Oaks. Those attending the meeting were seated at quartet tables cen tered with bouquets of summer flowers. Mrs. H. S.* Creswell, president, presided. The invocation was giv en by Miss Lucy Harrison. In charge of the evening’s pro gram was the Civil Defense com mittee, composed of Mrs. Grace Martin, Mrs. Sam Merka, Mrs. Virgil Parr, Mrs. Virginia Wat- tinger, Mrs. G. B. Vance, Mrs. H. S. Creswell, Miss Lucy Harrison, Miss Ada Duncan and Miss Alma Ewing, chairman. Miss Ewing introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Miss Mat- tie Treadwell, regional director of Women’s Activities in Civil De fense. Miss Treadwell was a colonel in the WAC’s during World War II and was a member of Oveta Culp Hobby’s staff. She has recently helped in the writing of a book, to be published soon, on the history of the WAC’s and their service to the world. At present her head quarters is in Denton. In her talk she stressed the im portance of being prepared for atomic attack, tornado, fire or oth er disaster. She pointed out that confusion could be avoided by se lecting certain persons to take charge in case of disaster and by designating a specific place for them to meet. She suggested several Avays in which the average citizen might be better prepared for civil defense. She recommended that the com munity offer courses in such things ns first aid, fire fighting, and iiome nursing. Following her talk Mrs. Ima Hardin gave a demonstration on first aid using Mrs. Dan Thompson as a model. Mrs. Grace Martin, state coor dinator of Women’s Activities in Aggie Wives Will Meet Tonight The Aggie Wives Bridge club will meet at 7:45 tonight in the social room of the Memorial Stu dent Center. Mrs. Barbara Jones will be hostess. Mrs. Jones was second place Winner at the last meeting of the club, which was at the home of Mrs. Georgi Tulenko. First place was won by Mrs. Margaret Jones and the traveling /leuce prize by Mrs. Ada Lee Wil liams. Civil Defense, displayed a exhibit showing materials and first aid kits which shoul<^ be kept in the home at all times. She then passed out pamphlets on preparation for defense. Visitors to the meeting were Mrs. A. D. Graham, Mrs. E. C. Mohelman and Miss Kahtleen Moore. Fair Awards Will Total $38,011.75 Cash awards in all departments will total $38,011.75 for the Heart O’ Texas Fair, in Waco Oct. 2-9, according to Executive Vice Presi dent Othel M. Neely. The largest allotment is for beef breeding cattle, $9,685.75, closely folkwed by the awards for the junior show in which Future Farm ers and 4-H Club members will compete for $8,878. Dairy aAvards will amount to $5,944, not including the junior dairy show. Other departments include wom en’s diAdsion, $899; ^quarter horse show, $840; cutting horse contest, $400 (plus entry fees) ; agricultural educational exhibits, $365. Remainder of the $38,011.75 is represented by the rodeo prize mpney plus entry fees. Besides the cash awards, there will be trophies, rosettes and rib- \bons in Amadous departments, and four heifers will be awarded in the junior dairy judging contest. Deadline for cattle, sheep and swine entries is Sept. 2; for broil er show, Sept. 11; quarter horse, Sept. 22, and cutting horses, Sept. 27. Mrs. Butler Gives Concert Sunday Mrs. Marvin Butler, vocalist, and Miss Margaret Berry, organist, will present a concert in the main lounge of the Memorial Student Center at 4:40 p.m. Sunday. The concert is a part of the MSC Summer Recital series, pre sented eA^ery Sunday afternoon. At the Grove Thursday, July 29—“Gun Belt” in Technicolor, starring Gedrge Montgomery.
