Thursday, December 10, 1953 THE BATTALION Page 5 Bowl Teams Showing "Lots Of Hustle 9 Head coaches of the army and air force 12th Man Bowl 4?ame football teams yester day said their teams are showing - . “lots of spirit and hustle.” Connie Mag-ouirk, head coach of the army squad, said, “The boys are whipping into shape, picking up plays and really working hard —all faster than I had dreamed they could.” John Salyer, the air force’s head coach, said, “We might not have the biggest team to ever hit the game, but when the whistle blows for the opening kickoff, our play ers will be in there all the way.” Tickets for the Dec. 17 game are 50 cents, with proceeds going to the student aid fund. They are being- sold in the corps by unit athletic officers and- first ser geants. Several business firms have tickets on sale for College Station and Bryan residents. Tickets may be bought at the following places—Aggieland Phar macy, Black’s Pharmacy, Canady’s Pharmacy, Lipscomb’^ Pharmacy, Madeley’s Drug Store, Major’s Cafe, Smith’s Cleaners, Young blood’s and the Memorial Student Center. The air force team will use the Y formation on offense. Dorm 4 Cagers Win 26-25 Dormitory 4’s Howard Tiller scored 11 points to help his team squeeze past Post Graduate hail, 26-25, in intramural basketball at the Grove yesteday. Buddy Smith was high man for Post Graduate hall with 11 points. Other scorers for dormitory 4 were Charles Shannon with six and James Lewis with seven points. A&M’s basketball teams last night split a doubleheader in De- Ware field house as the varsity lost to powerful Oklahoma City univer sity, 60-38, and the Fish trimmed Lon Moiuis junior college, 68-64. OCU’s Arnold Short, a 6 feet 3 forward who is a top candidate for ’53 all-America honors, poured in 30 points to take high-scoring hon ors for the night. James Addison led the Aggies with 12 points. A&M will play LSU in Baton Rouge Monday night and will meet Texas Tech at home next Wednes day night. The Fish will meet Al len Academy at home on the same night in another doubleheader. Short Makes 10 of 22 Short sank 10 of 22 field goals, 10 of 16 free throws and grabbed 14 rebounds. Addison made 4 of 7 field goals, 4 of 4 free throws and took 12 rebounds. OCU connected on 18 of 54 field goals and 24 of 35 free throws. The Aggies had 14 of 43 field goals and 10 of 15 free throws. A&M trailed 29-18 at the half after Short made seven straight points late in the second quarter. He tallied 16 points in the first half. Ags Rallied in Third In the third quarter the Cadets rallied and pulled up to a 27-31 score as Addison made eight of his points. Here Short sank two free throws and a beautiful jump shot, and OCU was out of danger. The visitors, ranked 19th nation ally in the Associated Press rat ings, did not substitute until 4:06 deep in the third quarter. 9 The Fish had to battle from be hind a 30-36 halftime deficit to hand Lon Morris its first loss in six games. The Fish scored 10 straight points at the start of the third quarter and led 49-45 at its end. Late in the final quarter they had built up a 65-54 lead. Robert Burrow, 6 feet 7 Lon Morris center, scored 29 points. Guard Ted Harrod dropped in 15 to lead the Fish. It was his four driving lay-up shots in the third bounding job for the Fish. The quarter that did much to start the floor play of Guard Lee Smith al so stood out. Little James Emer son, 5 feet 6 Lon Morris guard, Fish on the win route. Gattis Scores 12 Bob Gattis, 6 feet 4 forward, scored 12 points and did a good re scored 15 points, including several nice crip shots.
