FROM THE CITY DESK Bond, Ordinance Asked of Council By HARRI BAKER Battalion City Editor With both the Recreation Council and the school board asking for money, Monday night’s City Council meeting will affect almost every citizen in College Station. The Recreation Council will ask for the passage of an ordinance putting them on a tax-supported basis. They es timate that a tax of between five and 10 cents per one hun dred dollars of assessed property value would be sufficient to give them a yearly revenue of from $1,250 to $2,500. This would figure out to not more than three dollars for the av erage tax payer. The Recreation Council had originally planned to ask for the passage of a charter amendment, but state law prohibits the amending of a charter until two years after it adoption. A majority vote of the six-man City Council will pass an ordinance. If a majority of the voters vote for the bonds, they will be put on sale. After presenting several plans to a community meeting, the school board decided on the plan to build a new high school and an elemen tary school in College Hills. If the bond issue is approved by the council, the school board plans to have a series of neighborhood meetings to explain the building program to the taxpayers. Incidentally, City Council meet ings are open to the public. Any one who wants to may sit in on the meetings, which are held in the city hall. Also coming up for the City Council in the near future are the petitions of the Lone Star Gas Company and the Southwest States Telephone Company to raise their rates in this area. Since the rate increase affects Bryan exactly the same as College Station, the two councils will meet jointly to vote on the raises. A meeting has been scheduled for Dec. 12 to discuss the gas raise, but no date has been set for a hearing on the phone rates raise.
