Sports Round-up La Salle Beats Top-Seeded Dukes in NIB Meet 39-46 Bill Stalter Stalter was the high point man of last year’s SWC Track mee, scoring 12Vz points. New York, March 14 — CP> — Young and swashbuckling La Salle continued its Cinderella role in the National Invitation Basketball tournament last night by knocking off top-seeded Duquesne, 59-46, to gain the championship round. It was the thir straight upset victory for unseeded La Salle, which beat towering Seton Hall and fourth-rated St. John’s in earlier appearances. For mighty Duquesne, whose on ly previous loss in 23 games this season was an overtime defeat by Villanova, it was an evening of ab ject misery before a sellout crowd of some 18,000 at Madison Square , Garden. j The “Iron Dukes,” fourth-ranked nationally, were completely out- l fought, out-thought and outshot by the freshman-flavored band of explorers from the Quaker City. Kansas City, March 14—</P)— Murray,'Ky., state’s thoroughbreds showed championship class in wal loping the Whitworth College Pri- tates of Spokane, 81-69 in the opening quarter-final game of the National Inter-collegiate (NAIB) Basketball tournament last night. Murray State failed to stop the scoring of Whitworth’s 6 foot 8 inch Ralph Poison who poured in 41 points but the Spokane team was no match for the Thorough breds. Murray State had a rather easy time after finishing the fii’st quar ter in front 22-13. Murray State, with Joe Mikes hitting for 28 points for the even ing, had an 18-point lead, 50-32, at the half and was in front 65-48 as the last quarter got under way. New Haven, Conn., March 14- GP>—Jon Marshall, Yale’s sensa tional junior from Australia, broke the National Intercollegiate 1500- meters record last night as he suc cessfully defended his eastern in tercollegiate swimming league title. His time was 19:03.7. That’s better than the 50-meter (long course) mark of 20:02.2 which Keo Nakama, A Korean then swimming for Ohio State, record ed eight years ago in the same pool. Marshall went in. front of his teammate, Wayne Moore, who also broke Nakama’s standard, at about the 250-meter mark, and won by 25 meters, or half the distance of the tank. Moore has clocked in 19:24.7. Aggie Sports . . . . . . On Schedule FRIDAY—Baseball, Varsity vs. BAMC, Kyle Field at 2 p. m. Freshmen vs Blinn JC at Brenham. This is the real thing. Pilots call it a “hot scramble.” Live ammo rides in their guns. It starts when an Air Force radar station detects an aircraft which cannot be identi fied. A telephone call by direct wire gal vanizes the jet crews into action. Modern air defense requires lightning-fast, dependable communication. That’s why our radar defense system is interlinked by a web of direct telephone lines. Some of today’s college graduates will be piloting Air Force jets. Others will be wel comed into the Bell System where they can help, in peace or w r ar, in the tremendous job of meeting the communications needs of our nation. BELL TELEPHONE SYSTEM
