Thursday, June 21, 3951 THE BATTALION Page 3 Yankees,Tigers Score Softball Loop Victories Taylor Wilkins pitched the Yankees to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs in a loop game of the College Station Summer Softball League yesterday. Williams led the Yankee hitting with a brace of singles. The lead ing hitter for the Cubs was M. L. Cashion, Jr. with a triple but Cub Manager Aden Magee, Jr. walloped a double to be right be hind him. Losing hurler for the Cubs was Cashion. The Yankees unreeled a twin killing that featured the spark ling play of Wilkins, Alderson and Burk. In the other contest of the day, the Tigers trimmed the Giants down to size with a 5-2 licking. For the Tigers, Newt William son got credit for the, win while Sonny Prewitt, a “ringer” was ^barged with the loss. ^■^Ringers” are permitted in the ^^£ue. Sox Must Toe Line to Retain Loop Lead By Associated Press The Chicago White Sox’s chances of holding first place on the tra ditional July 4th dividing line hinge on the next five games with New York and Boston. If Paul Richards’ White Sox can safely skirt the Yanks and Red Sox series on the road they’ll go home with a comfortable lead. Fresh out of pitchers, both the White Sox and Yanks fall back on unreliable workmen for today’s fi nale of the current series at Yankee Stadium. Either Howie Judson or sore-armed Saul Rogovin will work for the Sox against Spec Shea, who was treated roughly on relief in the series opener. Pierce Does Job But Loses Richards got a well-pitched game by Billy Pierce yesterday but lost, 2-1, when the Sox threw away countless chances. Over-ambitious base running, one of their prime assets, backfired on the fleet Sox. Eddie Lopat seemed on the verge of collapse several times but man aged to last the route for his 10th victory. He allowed 10 hits to five off Pierce, Cleveland, which follows Chicago into Yankee Stadium, cut loose with an 18-hit attack at Boston to whomp the Red Sok, 14-8. Avila Parks Three Bobby Avila unloaded three home runs and a single—a total of 15 bases, only two short of the league record held jointly by Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig. While the upper crust of the league wrestled for the important positions, the second division small- fry did some jousting on their own. Detroit split a twi-night double with the Philadelphia A’s, winning 7-2 and losing 5-4. The even break let the A’s out of the cellar because St. Louis lost to Washing ton, 5-1. That combination left the Brownies in exclusive control of the dungeon. Holmes Happy Tommy Holmes found the secret of managing his very first day on the job. Just start Warren Spahn.' The capable Boston Braves lefty gave his new boss a comfortable afternoon with a five-hit 9-0 romp over Chicago. Just to make it sure, Spahn hit a three-run homer, Louis’ 4-2 edge over the Giants. double and single. He fanned eight to boost his league-leading total to 65. The pennant race remained un changed with both Brooklyn and runnerup New York losing. The Dodgers’ first place margin still is games. Crafty Kenny Raffensberger hogtied the Dodgers with four hits, 2-1. Even so, the Dodgers outhit the Reds who managed only three off Johnny Schmitz and Clyde King. Red Munger worked in and out of trouble, striking out nine, in St. Berg Downs Zaharias In Western Tourney Philadelphia, June 21—CP)— Mrs, Babe Didrikson Zaharias lost her temper and her grooved swing yesterday while Patty Berg click ed off steady sub-par golf to eli minate the defending champion, 1 up, in their second round match in the Women’s Western Open tournament. The triumph for Miss Berg was her second in four days over the top woman golfer of the nation and sent her into today’s quarter- finals with three other ranking professionals and four amateurs. The sturdy redhead from Minn eapolis defeated Mrs. Zaharias, a four-time winner of this touma- ment, in the rich cross-country Weathervane last Sunday by a .stroke. YOUR TO PROTECT FURS AGAINST (AND WINTER GARMENTS) MOTHS-FIRE-THEFT The margin of the babe’s set back actually was the second hole which she conceded to Miss Berg after angrily upbraiding the pho tographers. After driving into a trap and sending her second shot into the rough, Mrs. Zaharias missed a third by failing to hit the green. “Okay,” she said to one photo- gfapher, “now I suppose you want another picture.” She picked up her ball with a flourish and said to Miss Berg: “You can have this one, Patty, I can’t do anything with all this 'clicking.” At this point Mrs. Zaharias was lying three and Miss Berg two, just' off the green. The big Texan had an outside chance to have the hole. Mi-s. Zaharias, who has a dis taste for feminine finery, also halted proceedings at the fourth ’tee’ and called some girls to sur round her. There, hidden from the view of a 1,000 spectator gallery, she re moved a petticoat and handed it to a fyiepd. It was. uncomfortable on such a sweltering day, she con fided. Nedbalek Sinks Aggies 6-0 In No-Hit Contest The Aggie softballers took it on the chin again last night at Calvert as Nedbaleks Serv ice Station whitewashed them 6-0 behind the no-hit pitching of L. E. Winder. Winder sent 13 men back to the dugout mumbling about his pitch ing—he whiffed them. For the Aggies, Bryan Beard sent 12 of the gas station men back via the strikeout route. Beard allowed six hits and did n’t walk a man. Winder walked one, A1 Rollins, Ag third baseman in the third as both sides were loose afield. The Aggies hobbled four times, twice in the first and twice in the seventh as Nedbaleks scored five of their six runs in these two innings. Tuesday night, Madisonville’s All-Stars, behind the three-hit pitching of B. J. Lloyd, defeated the Aggies 4-1. Alvin Luedke of Nedbalek’s Ser vice Station hurled for the Aggies and allowed the same number of hits but three Aggie errors hurt. The three hits the Aggies col lected were off the bats of Jewell McDowell, Red Stribling and Dick Lentzen., They were all singles. Lloyd set 11 Aggies down via the strike-out route while Luedke whiffed one Madisonville foe. The All-Stars were guilty of one mis- cue. MEN! tr k Muscles available now! The Bear infield didn’t bobble the ball once as they played a much better brand of ball than their previous games. Dorm 15 lost the toss and as a result had to take the home posi tion to open the game. Lead off man Dick Hampton flew out to short, Frog Morris and Jerry Ball blasted the next ball out into left field where it was hauled down by Boo Broussard. Dorm 15 got Har vey Helms on base with a walk and clean-up man Froggy Austin whammed out a single. Phil Tanis was the next man up to the plate and he flew out to Broussard to retire the side. Bizzell Fails in First Bear lead off man A1 Rollins flew out to 15 leftfielder, Dick Hampton ^nd his follow up man, Clark Edwards, went down for the full count. A strong wind blew Neil Baxter’s fly out into left field and right into the hands of Hamp ton to retire the side. The best play of the game came in the top of the second when 15 pitcher Rudy Almanguer hit a grounder to short Frog Morris. He underhanded it to Second Baseman Dick Steigemeyer who tagged 15 runner Irwin Engel and then flip ped it to Dandy Edgar un first for the first double-play of the year. The only error of the game came in the bottom of the second when 15 Centerfielder Jerry Bell drop ped Frog Morris’ fly and allowed him to pull up safe on first. Games Only Counters Only runs scored in the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Bear first baseman slapped a single right over the third base bag and walked into first without a bit of trouble. Frog stole second and third and when Dick Steigemeyer hit a high fly deep into left field, he touched the bag and then streaked on in home. In the last three innings the Bears were in real danger three times as the 15 troops got men in scoring position three times and each of those times they had two outs. Bear pitcher T. J. King received credit for the win and Rudy Al manguer had to take that lone some walk down mourner’s row. Milner Downs 16 In the only other softball game scheduled Milner took the Dorm 16 troopers 8-6 in six and a half inn ings. Winning pitcher was Wert Love and loser was Mac Reynolds. Texas Geologists kept their first place position in the non-military volleyball league without too much trouble as they beat Walton 15-6 and 15-13. The only time the boys from Co-edland were in trouble was the second game when they had to come from behind 7-1 to beat the Walto utes. Fish Volleyball Freshman volleyball got under way yesterday with two .games scheduled in the Grove courts. Sqdn. A downed the B Sqdn. “fly-boys” 15-8 in the first game. B Boys came bouncing back in the Bart Haltom, professional golf er of Bryan and a former member of the A&M golf team, set a course record of 69 yesterday afternoon on the A&M golf course. Haltom put together two bird ies on the front nine for a two- under par 34 and a combination of one par and one bogey on the back nine for an even par 35 to set the record on the 6715-yard, par 71 layout. His birdies on the front nine came on number 7, a 189-yard par 3 where he drove on and sank a short putt and on number 9, a 595- yard par 6 where three terrific wallops and a putt gave him a one- under figure. On the back nine he had a bogey second game to trounce the A Boys 15-2 but A turned the tables again in the third game 15-7 to win the mqtch. D Co. had relatively little trouble in sinking C Co. with 15-9 and 15-4 wins. 5 on the 385-yard par 4 twelfth hole but got back to par figures by birdying the difficult par 4 number 17. The previous record of 70 was set by John “Buddy” Weaver of Rice Institute during the final round of the SWC Individual Champion meet which was held on the A&M golf course in May. Haltom was playing in a fou r- some with Col. C. C. Whitney, Bil ly Baker, a member of the past season’s golf team and Buddy Moore.
