Assassin Suspects Held in New York New York, Nov. 23—CP)—Two top officials of the Puerto Rican Nationalist party in New York were arrested last night as the pos sible brains behind a recent plot to assassinate President Truman. Two Nationalist gunmen stormed Blair House in Washington Nov. 1 but were cut down by guards’ bul lets befoi'e they could get to the president. One gunman and one guard died in the duel. The Nationalists are a radical Puerto Rican group who demand full independence from the U. S. They recently sparked an armed uprising on the island. Arrested tod*y were Julio Pinto Gandia, 42, a veteran terrorist and New York president of the Nation alist party, and Juan Bernardo Leb- ron, 28, a past president of the New York unit of the party. More arrests may be in the off ing, it was reported. “CINDERELLA” — Color Also — “GOLDEN TWENTIES’ Going. Going... Gone... to the Campus Cleaners “Over the Exchange Store” “In the Old George’s” Nation (hunts Blessings By ASSOCIATED PRESS Americans pause today in a world of turmoil and un certainty to thank God for their blessings and to pray for peace. The peace prayers were requested by President Truman, who in his Thanksgiving proclamation entreated his fellow countrymen to offer petitions for peace “in church, chapel and synagogue, in their homes and in the busy walks of life, every day and everywhere.” Thanksgiving Day finds many Americans far from their homes in uniform-fighting aggression in Korea, stationed at far flung outposts from the equator to the arctic, or train ing against any grim eventuality that may be lurking in the future. The armed services planned to serve mouth-watering dinners to the troops, even those within a few thousand yards of the front lines. A 35-pound tom turkey headed the menu at Blair House, temporary home of the Truman family. The presi dent had no announced plans other than a. quiet holiday and a 1:30 p. m. Thanksgiving dinner with Mrs. Truman, their daughter Margaret, and Mrs. Truman’s mother, Mrs. David Wallace. The weather over most of the nation had a wintry touch, with a cold wave moving in on the mountain and plains states, and snow or rain forecast for much of the North Cen tral United States. As an echo of the double Thanksgiving mix-up of Roosevelt days, some sections were celebrating not only to day but next Thursday too. One of these areas is Texas, whose Governor Allan Shivers observed that a Texan has twice as much to be thankful for as other Americans. Purpose of the ceremo nies will be to recognize the work and accomplishments of the minis ter. Refreshments will be served at the informal reception, at which six memorial 75th anniversary plates will be presented Rev. Brown. He will go into semi-re tirement sometime in the near fu ture. All Baptist students have been extended a special invitation to at tend, acording to Rev. Anderson. Sinking Police Back to Work, City Honest Stamford, Nov. 23—(2P)—Stam ford’s police force was back on the job today. Six policemen—all of the force except Chief of Police George C. Flournoy — quit yesterday after demanding more pay. Flournoy today gave them all an opportunity to go back to work at an increase of pay from their pre sent $185 a month to $200. The city council authorized the increase at a special session. The morning shift went on about noon. The evening shift at 4 p.m. brought all back. The 12-hour work shift was left unchanged, Stamford Mayor W. C. Markham said. Parking meters operated on the honor system before the policemen came back. Stamford continued its law-abiding ways without incident. County and state officers patrolled the city. EXCLUSIVELY AT SHAFFER’S . . «.
