KELLEY’S RESTAURANT Bryan The Battalion QUARTERBACK J^rry Crossman Offensive End The SMU Mustangs have been on the go all year, and until two weeks ago led the Southwest Conference in total offense. Now holding the lead are the Texas Aggies, and when these two teams meet Saturday, a whale of battle can be the only outcome. Killer Kyle Rote, 190 pounds packed into a 6’ 1” frame, is the big gun for the Ponies. He kicks, passes, runs, blocks, and tackles. Nothing phases him. So far this season he has rolled up 463 yards on the ground in 76 carries for an average of 6.1 for carry. Through the air the San Antonio product has garnered 357 yards, com pleting 18 of 39 passes, two for touchdowns. “Little Rusty,” the Mustangs top signal caller, is H. N. Russell, Jr., son of the coach of the Ponies. His ability this year has been put to all tests. But his extra qualities as a pass receiver have also helped. Another star of SMU’s colorful backfield is Johnny Champion. The 165 pound, 5’ 4” senior, is known to be an excellent blocker. Andy Hillhouse Double-Duty End Charley McDonald Defensive Halfback Last year when Doak Walker was injured in the Rice game and Frank Payne was unable to play in the last six contests of the year, Champion got his chance and he made good. He averaged five yards everytime he carried the ball and he caught 17 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns. He passed only once and that was complete to Zohn Milam for 78 yards in the Notre Dame game. Pat Knight rounds out the regular backfield combination of the Mustangs. Weighing 190 pounds, Knight is used as a blocker more on offense and as an end on defense. Fred Benners, the man with the three way action arm, has the Southwest Conference completely in an uproar with his phenomenal passing. This year he has completed 69 passes of 123 attempts, for 914 yards and eight touchdowns. He has been given individual credit for defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes with his passing which last year was also great, although he didn’t play the first two games, but in the final eight, he averaged 55 minutes. At that time the 190 pound, 6’ 3” Dallas junior, com pleted 47 of 85 passes for 706 yards and six touchdowns. Bob Smith Offensive Fullback A sophomore end, Jimmy Hawn has been one of the regular starters for the Ponies at this position.
