Rush Tackle Aggies: We Are With You All The Way “Your Friendly Ford Dealer” BRYAN MOTOR COMPANY 415 N. Main Bryan Clinton Gwyn Tackle By Roger Coslett The Cadets of A&M will bring all their big guns to bear on the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute when the two teams meet this Saturday night on Kyle Field in what promises to be a grand slam battle. It will be a case of military power versus military power with the outcome resting on what caliber troops the field generals have at their disposition and how well they de ploy them. Front liners for the Red, White and Yel lows from Lexington, Va. will be 15 pounds heavier per man than any V.M.I. team since before the war. The Keydets boast depth as well as weight in both the offensive and defensive line positions from tackle to tackle, Captain Kirby Bernich, 170, and two other returning lettermen will bolster the at tack at center for the Keydets. What Ber nich lacks in weight he makes up in fight. Close behind him for center honors is Tom Hedge—185. 27 Returning Lettermen These are but three of 27 returning let termen from the team that last year won three, tied one and lost five. These 27 let termen played a big part in the Keydets season opener victory over William and Mary. A loss to George Washington followed the William and Mary victory, with some prestige being regained last weekend when the Keydets rebounded to trounce Richmond 26-14. At the right guard slot for coach Tom Nugent’s eleven will be a sophomore, Tom my Bonnett—185. He was injured in the Washington fray but is expected to be ready for the tilt against the Aggies. Weir Good man—200, doubles as offensive guard or de fensive right end. Other strong contenders for the guard spot are Jerry Eggleston and Rob Leighty two men who are rumored to be mighty fast on their feet. Six lettermen seem to answer the team’s guard problems. Top among them are Joe Adeeb—225 and Jack Frankeberger—210. Bill Lauerman—195 has so far shaped up as the best tackle in the defensive Keydet line. Besides Goodman the Keydets will prob ably have E. L. Quisenberry—184 to bolster their defensive flanking positions. Offen sive ends so far seemed well manned by NeaL Petre and Jay Grumbling, two juniors each over six feet in height. Fairly Fast Backfield Behind this wall is a light but fairly fast backfield. Field general for the V.M.I. at tack will be either Jimmy Coley or Joe Marchand. Both are apt parsers. This quarterback position has proved the major problem especially since Nugent has come up with his new “I-T” formation. The “I-T” formation, invented by Nug ent, completely surprised William and Mary and deserves much of the credit for the win. But by the time the George Washington game came along their scouts had had time to prepare a defense against it. Halfbacks are plentiful and up until halfback Fred Anson’s injury this was one of the brighter spots on the squad. Anson, 155- pound left halfback is expected to be in shape by this weekend though. George Chumbley—178 sophomore flash handles most of the kicking duties from his right halfback post but he too has been in jured and it is doubtful whether or not he will see action this weekend. Ready to fill in at either of the halfback posts are Jack Lowden, Bland Wilson or Tommy Birge. Stump Is Big Gun Big. gun of the V.M.I. attack is 192-pound Joe Stump a fullback that blasts his way through would be tacklers. This will be the first meeting between “The West Point of the South” and the Ag gies since Virginia Military Institute was founded in 1839.
