V P?ge 8 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 194iJ Dick Todd Is Backfield Coach Dick Todd, all-time Aggie grid great in 1936-38, arrived here last spring in time to take over his new duties as backfield coach and give his pupils some pointers learned while playing for the Wash ington Redskins pro football team. Todd, an A&M graduate in the class of 1939, played his last year of football here one year before A&M, won the national football title. A native of Crowell, Todd was one of the greatest sensations of the high school gridirons of Texas while performing for Cro well High. He was at one time tabbed by sportswriters as the “Crowell Cyclone.” Averaging over seven yards per carry while in high school, he still holds the world’s record for the most number of points scored in one season, 318. In three seasons of play, he rolled up G64 points. In his sophomore year at A&M, •4 ■ I KALART COMPAK PASSIVE SPEED FLASH r - 1 There it o Kalart Flash Gun for Almost Every Camera. While playing professional ball with the Redskins, Todd and Baugh became room mates and close friends. During the war, he entered the Navy and was sent to Iowa Pre flight, where he led the football team of that station to a near upset of the Angelo Bertelli Notre Dame team. In his last years with Washing ton, the Aggie-ex was used as a defense specialist. This knowledge is expected to materially help the Aggie backfield this fall. Now a part time wheat farmer in West Texas, Todd is married and has a young son. - BASEBALL - (Continued from Page 1) second year men working for those positions are Yale Larry, ’Bob Farmer and Jack Mills. The men who do end up on the starting nine are going to have to hustle for their posi tions. The 1949 Aggie basebell team should be another good one and the only way they can be better than last year is to take the con ference crown. And, if the pitching comes through, they may walk away from the diamond with a good season and the trophy on the shelf of the Academic Building. TRADITIONS - (Continued from Page 2) member what the Giants were in those days. In 1911 the A&M-Texas game at Houston broke up in a riot after a TU win. Relations were broken off for some years as a result. Intramurals Too While intercollegiate activities were being built up, the college never lacked general-participa tion athletic activities. Company athletics go so far back into A&M history that no one knows when they started or who start ed them. By 1903 they were in full swing, and company teams were followed as eagerly as the “big” teams. In 1927, the present intramural program was begun, incorporating the company athletics. W. L. Pen- berthy, now dean of students, came to A&M the next year and took over management of the pro gram.
