They had been In the air LOOH^*— hours, one minute. Six weeks was the goat they set when they took to the air March 15 for their fourth try at exceed ing the 10-year-old endurance rec ord of 726 hours. Their three previous failures— once because of magneto trouble, twice because of ice on the carbu- rator—had been costly, and they were kept in the air only by con tributions of $1 each from some 2,000 Fullerton citizens. The Cham ber of Commerce also had chipped in some $1500 from its surplus qash. A great cheer arose as a shot from the official timing stand announced that the pair had passed the 1008-hour mark. Im mediately, the plane started down on its approach. The pilots—jadto alternated at the controls during the long grind- left the plane under their own pow er ami embraced their wives. Then they started walking to the stand. Riedel was out of the plane first. Both appeared in unexpectedly good physical condition, deeply bronzed by the sun. Both smiled and waved lo the crowd. They were bundled into an am bulance to go to a hotel for a physical eheckyp, Two physicians were waiting.
