Its plot comes here at a fitting! time of the year since it deals, with the Santa Claus in Macy’s of New'York City. ' [>.; Ijj 111 J The hero is a benign, pixillated, old gentleman (Edmund Gwenn) who believes he is the one-and-pnly St. Nick. Sitting on his throne in the store’s largb toy department his aim is to convince a grimly progressive little girl (Natalie Wood) that he is not a fraud and to convert his employer (Maureen O’Hara) to the Christmas faith. Packed neatly into the heart warming story are two contradic tory morals: an anti^commercial- ism attitude toward Christmas and an endorsement of the: idea that faith, hdnesty, kindness, and the innocence of the' imaginations are to be respected because no other j kind of investment pays off so well ■ in hard cash. * tmas ° GREAT EXP ace, SpreSM). David Lean as dir hieved a success In bringing such famous characters of the story as Pip, Magwitch, Mis» Havisham, Attorney daggers, Estella, and Herbert Pocket to life. Classed as a yam with very little reqlism in it, “Great Expectations” is pictured in a matter-of-fact man ner with no xpologie? for its incre dulity. Very little “explaining” is done for the audience—it’s all giv en straight 'faced. Though it lacks known actors of this country, their acting will more than reward those who are not fans. ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO (Campus, SpreSM). Here’s a dash of the historic adventure popular several years back that people stil! go for even though Hollywood has changed to psycho logical dramas. Starring two can’t-miss (and didn’t) actors, Gary Cooper as the adventurer bimself and Basil Rath- bone in the role of monstrous Kublai Khan, this will have real action and color all “he-men” will love. rl M HONEYMOON (Queen, Another venieli of the screen to SM) carry Shirley Temple (this time from the adolescent to the adult woman), this bright comedy con cerns the premarital difficulties of a GI on a three-day pass who joins his girl in Mexico City to be mar ried.
