Wednesday Afternoon, May 1, 1946 The Battalion Page 3 Skidding Aggies Lose to Rice Owls 8-2 Reshuffled Batting Order Gets Total Of Six Safeties; Beesley Is Hit Hard The Texas Aggie baseball team picked up momentum in its slide down the Southwest Conference skids yesterday, dropping its second defeat out of three games to the Rice Owls in Houston. The score was 8 to 2. A reshuffled Cadet batting list was ineffective against the offer ings of Bill Bishop, who held the Aggies to six safeties and allowed no earned runs. Earl Beesley, Ag gie mound ace, was hit hard, al lowing 11 hits, four bases on balls, and eight runs in 7 2-3 innings. He was succeeded in the eighth by Bardwell, who allowed one walk and one hit in facing two batters. Purtle pitched to the last two Owls. Russell Mays, who took over Cotton Lindloff’s shortstop posi tion yesterday in an apparent at tempt by Coach Lil Dimmitt to add batting strength to his line-up turned in a neat fielding perfor mance, handling three putouts and six assists and initiating the only double play of the game, but failed to hit safely in two official trips to the plate. “Hub” Moon, who has been shifted to the Number Four hitting position for the last two games, led the Aggie batters with a double and a single out of four tries. First score of the game came in the fourth inning, when Moon went to first on Hollingsworth’s error, moved up to third on an outfield fly and a wild pitch, and tallied when Creegan’s throw to second to catch Arnold, went into center field. Rice tied it up in the same inning with two singles, a passed ball, and an outfield fly. In the fifth, Willingham dou bled, was bunted to third, and scored on Macaluso’s error, to put the Aggies ahead again, but the Owls bunched a triple, a double, two singles, and Thornton’s error for three runs in their half. A double by Stockbridge, a triple by Powell, and Delafosse’s errorr brought in two more Owl tallies in the seventh, and in the eighth, Creegan’s single, Bishop’s sacri fice, a pair of free rides to Costa and Macaluso, and a timely single by Stockbridge brought in two more. Dorm 16 won the Intramural football championship by defeating Bizzell Hall 24-0 in the finals play ed Monday, April 29. Both teams composed entirely of veterans, played hard but Bizzell had some bad breaks which an alert Dorm 16 team took full advantage of. Bizzell won the toss up and chose to kick off. Utesch received for Dorm 16 and ran the ball to the 35 where he was stopped by Jones of Bizzell. From there, quarterback Ben Hopson, with some fine blocking, worked his way to the 1 yard line. On the next play Ned Broun went inside right end for the first score. Bob Kachtick’s try for conversion was blocked by Jones. Palmer kicked off for 16, the ball going out of the end zone. Bizzell took the ball on their 20 and after 3 futile attempts to gain yardage, kicked. Broun return ed the ball to his 40. Andy McMa han carried the ball inside left end for 20 yards. Utesch then took the ball around right end to rack up another 20. On the next play Hopson took a short pass from Broun and side stepped his way over the goal line to make the count 12-0 for 16. Kachtick’s try for the extra point was again blocked by Jones. Bizzell’s charg ing left end. Palmer again kicked off for 16 with Johnson of Bizzell returning the ball to his 20. Bizzell’s run ning plays were again stopped by the hard hitting line of Dorm 16. Taylor attempted to kick out of the hole but was blocked on the 20 where 16 took over. Working under the “T”, Hopson, with la terals to McMahan and Utesch, ad vanced the ball to Bizzell’s four yard line. The half ended there with 16 leading by a score of 12-0. In the second half Bizzell took to the air, but Broun intercepted a pass and ran the length of the field for a touchdown. Palmer’s kickoff went to Johnson in the right corner. He was stopped on the 30 by Joe Allen, who along with Palmer and Captain Louis Buck, played a bang-up defensive game. Two plays later McMahan intercepted a pass intended for Rollins of Bizzell and worked his way across the line for the fourth score of the game. Palmer’s try for the extra point was wide. Biz zell fumbled Palmer’s kickoff on their own four yard line and had to kick after three unsuccessful tries for yardage. Broun return ed the punt to the thirty where he was stopped by Jones and Tay lor. From there, on some timely plays called by Hopson, 16 advanc ed to the four, just short of anoth er goal when the game ended with a final score of 24-0 for Dorm 16. Class A Swim Prelim.
