B ted V2|!* PAGE 16 THE BATTALION MONDAY, JUNE 5, 1044 “Y” To Observe 100th Anniversary The Y.M.C.A. of College Station will join with 10,000 others throughout the world to observe the 100th anniversary of the founding of their movement by 12 young men in a London bedroom. Chief event in the observance in the United States will be “Second Century Day” dinners held by Y. M. C. A. members in nearly 1,000 cities and towns Tuesday. An esti mated quarter million persons are expected to attend. Radio come dian Bob Hope will take time out from his gags and wise cracks to night to pay tribute to the Y. M. C. A. Its centenary finds the Y. M. C. A. at work on virtually every bat tle front in this global war. But service to fighting men is no new thing to the “Y”, for almost from the day it was founded, the Asso ciation has done its best to make things easier for soldiers and sail ors. Just a few years after it was established in the United States the Y. M. C. A. was providing food, medical care, recreation and reli gion for both the North and South. Today, according to M. L. Cash- ion, general secrettary of the A. & M. Y. M. C. A., “Y” workers are serving Allied invasion troops in Great Britain, providing first aid, recreation and performing a score of other tasks in China, dodging German bombs to follow the men in Italy, and conducting 450 USO clubs in the United States, to men tion but a few of its jobs. Dallas A&M Club Holds Dance Wed. Members of the Dallas A. & M. Club danced to the music of Reg gie Childs and his orchestra at the Plantation in Dallas Wednesday night. A number of tables were re- Robert Pinkerton Heads Aero School Succeeding Barlow Recent Promotions Advance Associate Professor to Head Robert M. Pinkerton, associate professor of Aeronautical Engi neering at Texas A. & M. College since November 1941, has been named acting head of the depart ment, succeeding Dr. Howard W. Barlow, who Monday was designat ed acting dean of the School of Engineering by President Gibb Gilchrist. A native of Roodhquse, 111., Mr. Pinkerton received . his B. S. de gree from Bradley Polytechnic Institute at Peoria, 111., in 1928, majoring in Physics and mathe matics. From 1929 until he came to Texas A. & M. College, Mr. Pinkerton was research physicist at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory, NACA, at Hampton, Vo., excepting the school year 1931-32 when he took graduate physics at the University of Vir ginia. While at Langley Field, Mr. Pinkerton was chairman and in structor in the evening extension school of the University of Vir ginia, teaching aerodynamics, phy sics and mathematics. Since com ing to Texas A. & M. he has spec ialized in aerodynamic, and war training work especially in the air craft centers in the Fort Worth- Dallas area. served for members and their dates by the club.
