Great steps have already been taken in this direction by the Of fice of Emergency Management and the State department. Ar rangements have been made with many southern countries to con fine their exports of vital defense materials to the United States. In case purchases by private American industries do not absorb all the materials, the Metals Reserve Com pany and the Rubber Reserve Com pany will attempt to acquire all of the surplus at prices to be agreed upon at the time of purchase. An Inter-American bank for the promotion of adequate credit facilities, for the increased com merce between the republics, has been proposed by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Af fairs. Last week when the United States was attacked by Japan, the South and Central American coun tries proved their sincerity in de siring hemisphere solidarity by de claring war on the Nipponese em pire even before our own congress had time to assemble. True, many of these nations arc small and comparatively power less in a military sense, but they can help to make a blockade of the axis powers much more effective by refusing entry of totalitarian merchant ships to their ports. But aside from this aid and moral sup port, they have the raw materials which our industries will need to supply the armed forces in an all out war to defeat the dictators. Although great strides have been made in the development of South American industry, they are not sufficiently developed to give os material assistance. The United States is the richest nation in the world. If we are to receive the full benefit of the vast resources of Latin Americd, we must back South American enterprises to the limit. —BAMA SPORTS— (Continued from Page 5) this fall to net 456 yards. His 66 punts averaged 37.7 yards, and Nelson completed 25 out of 54 passes for a gain of 394 yards. He scored 48 of Alabama’s 234 points. Aside from the “all” boys com posing the star-studded Tide, Ala bama will start a formidable ar ray of gridiron talent against the Aggies in the Cotton Bowl. At the tackles will be Noah Langdale, 237-pound Phi Beta Kappa senior from Valdosta, Ga., and Mitchell Olenski, 220 pound sophomore. Langdale is the larg est man on the squad and is one of the best defensive men on the team. Olenski was rated on the Associated Press All-Southeastern sophomore team along with Don Whitmire, 215-pounder from De catur, who substitutes for Mitch. At center is Joe Domnanovich (Dom-non-o-vich), 200-pound jun ior letterman, rounding out Bis first year as a starter on the Tide. Joe is backed up by Bull Wesley, 202-pound senior and Doyle Lock- ridge, 185-pound sophomore. Jumping back in the secondary, Alabama presents one of the best squad of backs that has ever worn the red and white. At quarter is A1 Sabo, 186-pound junior from Los Angeles, Calif., and Billy Har rell, 160-pound senior from Opelika. Sabo leaves the signal-calling duties to Holt Rast and Harrell, but is one of the best blocking backs in the Southeastern confer ence. Harrell is a letter-earner >n football and track and is a smart field-general as well as a fine passer and kicker. Dave Brown, 185-pound junior letterman from Birmingham, starts at right half with Nelson at lett. and is also a highly-rated block er. Brown trotted a punt back 61 yards in the Tulane game to score first for Alabama that day. Right behind Nelson and Brown are Rust Craft and Howard Hughes, a fim pair of speedy backs, sharing much of the ball carrying duties. ed my campaign hat on way ball ray to football game Nov. 26, return it to h Room 9, Legett. fish Moore, FOR SALE—Model “A” Sport Road ster in good condition. Gunner’s Mates must keep the guns themselves in a good state <.f repair at all times, and have cus tody, under the Captain, of nil a ship’s ammunition. They must run daily powder tests and keep an accurate check on powder tem perature in various magazines. At battle stations, Gunner’s Mates have firing stations on all guns, control the ammunition sup ply to all batteries, and train and elevate the guns in response to signals from the gun director. The separate units aboard ship func tion as a closely-knit team, and the attitude of all Ordnancemen is reflected in the lines from the Firecontrolman’s Code: “ . . .
