Once more they have produced a weakly plotted but entertaining picture. This type of picture and the com bination have yet to be shown up as a box-office failure. This time, Joan Crawford, in the role of the boas'i favorite stenographer, man ages to wheedle everything except marriage out of the old boy. His wife naturally refused to divorce him because of the children. He owns a steamship line, and when things get to a point where the * poor steno has |p withdraw from the presence of her fond employer, he liberally awards her a trip to South America oa one of his boats until the old lady decides to get a divorce. Of course, on the ship there •.are several very attentive admirers. Two of the male passengers fall for her in a big way. Gable, as the owner of a large Sooth American rancho, becomes the chief admir er. Toward the end of the trip, the fond couple realise that they can not do without each other. Gable arranges for her to visit him on his ranch. Finally, Mie realises that she must return to New York' to break off relations with her old play-boy. Arriving there, she finds that he has already persuaded his wrife to divorce him so he could marry his new love. Disturbed by such loyalty, shal marries him. Months later she and Gable meet aerWsadany. They are still “that way'’ about each other, so they plaa to toll hubby all about it. Well, the action becomes somewhat critical when the old boy makes n rqa for the gun rack upon being told of the state of affairs. But he is gen erous and broadminded, and as usual bequeathes our heroine to the hero to be his all “until death do part” | The cast includes Joan Craw ford, Clark Gable, Otto Kruger, Stuart Erwin, and Una O’Connor. Mont gomery plays the some suave, smiling, roguish part that he has played in most of his latest films. Maureen O’Sullivan capably hold* your attention aa the comely farm lasa. The cast includes Robert Mont- gomety, Maureen O’Sullivan, Ed ward Arnold, Elisabeth Patterson, and C. Henry Gordon. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Palace r “The Dragon Murder Case.” The strangest and most fantas tic, yet the most exciting and baf fling of all of S. S. Van Dine’* murder mysteries. A new Philo Vance comes to the screen in the person of Warren William, and he carries out the part of the polish ed and somewhat supercilious de tective with ah easy fortituds. The story is of s new form of horror, s dragon. After the murder occurs, of course everyone is suspected, and by a proo^' of good acting and shrewd thinking the culprit is finally brought to justice by Ifaaaabi • Nevertheless, the picture is hair- raising and exciting enough to suit everyone’s taste. The first mur der of the series takes place at the Dragon Pool on the vast estate of a multi-millionaire scientist where guests hove gathered for a week end party, la the course of the evening, one of the guests, the fiance of the sister of the scient ist! (fives into the pool and fail* to come up. The police are notified, and the pool drained. No trace of the missing man is found, but great tracks, seemingly made by the talons of a pro-historic mom I star, are found. To add to thh. eerie situation, the half demented mother of the scientist tells of a huge dragoo which frequents the pool With this deep, dark mystery on his hands, Vance sots out to find the murderer, whether it be dragon or man. The conclusion ia very iatortoftiag;~ despite the usual outcome of the person you least suspect being the guilty par ty. The cast includes Warren Wil liam, Margaret Lindsay, Lyle Tal bot, and Eugene Psllotte. Saturday night at the Assembly Hall: “This Side of Heaven.” An entertaining picture dealing with the fortunes. The father is sure to be expoood i the embcssler, so he plans to vo the family from disgrace by taking aa- overdose of morphine. 07 elopes with her boy friend, but returns upon finding a fare well note in her hag from her her. Jane’s fiancee breaks the os to her that bar father i* wanted for the embeaalement, and she sees that he is the smug type who valnee his own skin above everything else. Meanwhile, Seth, disillusioned, speeds madly to his automobile, and inevitably meets with an accident Almost overcome with morphine, the father learns that the boy is to the hospital, and staggers out of the hoqae to go to s. The family mi seek him, and fears that he has gone to commit suicide. They learn that Seth is in the hospital, and find that the father is at higeedside, fainting. Seth ia not seriously hurt, and the battle begins to save the older man’s life. He now wants to live, and wins the battle with death. He recovers, but his smployers clamor for his arrest. Meanwhile, another member of the firm is on his way to Europe.
