But is it true that Wells is also correct in propounding his feminist theories ? Is woman equal to man in every respect? This is certainly the teaching of Richard Remington throughout his political career, and it formed a portion of the plat form on which he was elected to Parliament. The other portion seems to me to be in direct contrast— the theory of the “Endowment of Motherhood.” If Wells did not intend teaching this theory, he deefated his purpose in The New Machiavelli. Margaret, Remington’s wife, is utterly charac terless in so far as individualism is concerned. She is infatuated by Rem ington’s idealism, and marries him to help improve the world by these ideals. She cannot think for herself, and has only one good idea in the book—the inspiration to permit Rem ington to suit himself in regard to his relations with Isabel. He prob ably would have suited himself any way. Isabel is almost equally as weak. Her saving quality is her view of sex matters. One cannot help but admire her for her willingness to throw tra dition to the dogs and play her role with Remington. But she fails to have a single idea which would qualify her as a voter or a lawmaker. She would, however, have made a states man or other public man a good wife. The only woman in the book who achieves anything politically is Al- tiora Bailey, and the aforementioned" description of her shows clearly the light in which Wells held her. Cer tainly one would not want this ill- tempered, ill-thinking person as a governor. Perhaps Wells could picture just as many politically disqualified men as I have women, but is it possible that in giving a cross-section of Eng lish political life that he wbuld have left out a woman politician if women as a whole were capable in this field ? It is clear that Wells has attempt ed to mix the impossible in this novel—romance with a treatise on the political and social life of Eng land. Either portion of the book would have been good without the others, but this is an instance where two goods do not make a better. De F. WARNER IS WINNER OF AREO ESSAY CONTEST .V lililil PERCY DE F. WARNER Winner of an Eaglerock Airplane in a national aviation essay contest Percy De F. Warner, law student of New York university, and an organ izer of the school flying club, hopes to popularize flying among college students by the formation of non profit collegian aero groups. Drawing from his business exper ience in organizing the New York club, Warner prepared a series of four articles giving detailed data on the costs of plane and instruc tion. He outlines methods of financ ing college clubs, and gives valuable information on conduction an under graduate club so as to minimize risks and ease faculty apprehension. Warner, a student aviator in the Naval Air Reserve, is 22 years of age. He recently flew his plane from the Alexander Aircraft factory at Colorado Springs, Colo., sponsor of the national contest, to his home at Nantucket, Mass.
