PLAYWRIGHT WINS RECOGNITION OF LITTLE THEATRE Play Written by Member of Last Year’s Fish Class to be Read Before Campus Players A. & M. has harbored engineers of great ability and many agriculturists of note, but not until last year has there ever been a playright in the student body. L. James Wathen, a freshman last year, has written a three a#t play that won recognition from dramatic authorities all over the state. The play, which was named “Peo ple Aren’t Like That,” was produced during the past summer by the Dal las Little Theatre with so much suc cess that it is going to be put on again this summer. Since the Dallas Little Theatre has twice won national competitions for excellence, its ap proval of Wathen’s play is indeed complimentary. Wathen has offered the play to the Campus Players of A. & M. It is to be read at the next meeting of the Players and if it is favorably received it will be present ed here, this winter. Mr. C. O. Spriggs, member of the Campus Players and local authority on dramatic art, says of Wathen’s play, “For first play it is startlingly good, undoubtedly the boy has a meas ure of genius.” Wathen showed many of the char acteristics of literary g'enius during his stay here at A. & M. Though he was but seventeen years of age, he spent nearly all his free hours in the library browsing through works on philosophy and drama. He register ed in Architecture and showed a marked talent for drawing, but flatly failed his mathematics. His room mate, H. O. Lehman, says of him, “Wathen was a hard person to under stand; I was never quite sure that I knew him. He had all sorts of queer ideas about religion and philosophy. A strange thing about him was his abnormal love of grand opera music. He’d get a pass and ‘hit the highway’ to Houston or Dallas any time to hear a good singer.” Wathen’s love of music and his interest in musicians is shown by the selection of a prima donna as the leading character in his play.
