TH* BATTALION BASEBALL SEASON TO BEGIN FRIDAY Prospects for a Winning Team Are Bright This Year. The official baseball season will be gin Friday afternoon on Kyle Field with the strong Southern Pacific team from Ennis furnishing the op position against the Aggies. From all indications the game will be a good one of the early season variety and from this series of two games the sup porters of the maroon and white will have an opportunity of seeing the Farmer entry in action, and in this way some idea may be had of the way the Aggies will stack up against the other conference teams this year. For six weeks or more, the guid ing hand of Coach Rothgeb has been at work with a large squad of ball tossers, whipping them into shape for the coming campaign. When the call was issued for the baseball men to re port, there were nine letter men that answered roll call,—a man for every position. In addition to these were the entire personnel, with one or two exceptions, of last year’s Freshman team, the strongest the Aggies have had for many years, besides others who were untried. It has been quite a job to pick nine men from this group to carry the Ag gies’ colors and traditions in the com ing race, in fact all of the positions have not been settled as yet. Sport writers of the state have in their pre season dope, rather ignored A. and M.’s chances for a pennant and chain' pionship this year, but from all indi cations it looks as if the Aggies will be able to take care of themselves in a very capable manner against any team that the other schools in the conference put into the field,—with no exceptions. As to pitchers, the real strength of this department is not quite known. Captain Rogers is the only member of the staff that is a veteran and he should have his greatest season this year. Hillin and Bryant, both of them righthanders of last year’s Freshman team, are looking good in the prac tice games that have been held every day for the past month. Kishi, an other righthander, has shown a world of stuff and should deliver the goods this year. Bauknight, a sophomore portsider, has been effective in the practice games. Koerth, Olsen, Breh- mer and Blackman complete the list of hurlers. The selection of a capable receiver has been a difficult task, but the fight has settled down to three men: Schu- enermann, Johnston, and Brazelton. Schuenermann is a product of last year’s Freshman team while Johnston has been shifted from the initial sack to the position behind the bat and is rapidly developing into a receiver of ability. Brazelton is a veteran of last season. At first, Coach Rothgeb has three candidates in Steinaker, Johnston, and Grayson. It is possible that Johnston will alternate with Schuenermann and Grayson will do some outfield duty, but at any rate this place will be well taken care of. Crawford and Craig, both veterans of last year, are fight ing it out for the keystone sack. At present Crawford is nursing a couple of charlie-horses and may be out of the lineup for a few days. In the short field a merry battle rages between “Punk” Baker, and Royder, both of them newcomers on the squad, and Montgomery a letter man of last year. (Continued on Page 8) STAR ATHLETES TO VISIT HERE Interscholastic Track Meet to be Re vived at A. and M. College This Season. The revival of the interscholastic track meet at A. and M College should be of i merest to every student in school. With the meet open to every high school in the state, irrespective of size or grade, it will no doubt at tract athletes from every district. In accordance with a conference ruling, no transportation can be re funded to the schools participating. Unless a keen interest and spirit of competition is developed in the meet some schools may not be represented. However, the awarding of handsome, individual gold, silver, and bronze medals should be no small induce ment. All high schools and academies are invited to send teams. No dis tinction will be made as to whether a team is class A or B or whether it is of junior or senior rating. This fact makes each event open to all (§) <§) <§> (§) <§) <§) (§) <§) (§) (§>) (§> <§) <§> <§) Where Do You Get Real Service > ■ Casey’s Always, Service Excellente— Yea, ’Superb! <§) <§> <§) (§) (§) <§) (©) (§> <§) <§) <§) (§) (©) (§) (§) (§) (§) (§) <§) (§) (§) comers giving each contestant a chance to overcome some real compe tition. The task of getting invitations to all high schools and academies is a large one. In order that all schools way have an opportunity we wish to suggest that every student make a personal effort to see that his high school is invited. This may be done by simply sending them a copy of this issue of The Battalion or by writing a personal letter to the principal of the school. Requests for entrance blanks may be mailed to Frank G. Anderson, at College Station, who is in charge of arrangements for the meet. We sincerely hope that each student will avail himself of this op portunity to bring a prospective var sity man to the campus. With the magnificent athletic field at our dis posal there is no reason why we can not induce a goodly percentage of these high school athletes who enter the meet this spring to register here in the fall. The thing to do now is to get every eligible high school and academy athlete invited to this meet on the 25th of April.
