THE BATTALION 7 POLO MANUAL FOR THE INSTRUCTION OF CADETS (Continued from Page 3) on the other hand an occasional sharp reminder encourages obedi- ance to less active measures. Avoid a jerk on the reins when using the whip. Though the whip is used principally to get a quick start or greater speed a tap at the right time even on the shoulder will divert the pony from a fixed intention of de feating your object. 21. Intentionally striking a pony with the mallet to make him go is unpardonable; it is too much to ex pect of a pony to go straight and true while the ball is being struck if at the next motion the pony is struck. “Leave it” to the whip, spur and cluck. 22. The pony being trained to do your bidding he depends on you to keep him out of trouble. By keep ing an eye on the whole field—and not solely on the ball—you will be able to render more intelligent as sistance to your side and save your self and pony from dangerous col lisions. Better lost a slight advan tage than injure anybody or a pony. 23. If a pony falls get away from him as quickly as posible; the fall itself is not near so dangerous as getting caught under the pony. 24. While making a stroke or when riding off close the outside leg around the pony instead of sticking it out; this gives a surer seat and holds the pony up to the ball or the other pony. Pitchers and Catchers First of Local Squad to Report to Former Big Leaguer. Battery men report! This is the order that issues from athletic head quarters and if weather permits it is to become effective on Wednesday, Feb. 1st. Then it is that another sport will take its own rightful place in this vicinity where we already have men occupied with basket ball, wrest ling, tennis, polo, battalion foot ball and cross country dashes. Only catchers and pitchers are to be called out at first. Until the mid dle of February the attention and advice of Coach Gene Cochrehan will be centered on the “soup-bones” of the twirlers and on those who desire to display their wares under cover of mitt, mask, etc. This plan has been adopted in order to have some one in condition to pitch to the batters when the crowd comes out for batting prac tice. By this method it is hoped to prevent the usual sore arms and other early season troubles. Of course it is not known just who will answer this first call but we know that Captain-Elect Crawford will be out there with his paraphrenalia and working as hard as the average catch- ; er does in July. There is also Dinan who did some very creditable back- I stopping last year, and Chapman who j was the peppery representative from • the first class last spring on the squad. Jack Forgason is another likely can didate for this position who is due to report at the conclusion of the bat- tallion foot ball season. Among the pitchers are: Sprague and Olsen, who made letters by their excellent work on the mound last year; Matthews, the most versatile of Aggie diamond stars, and Severn, who has size and speed enough to be rather useful to any coach. Gill bids ] fair to pitch winning ball also, hut his basketball ability will keep him ! off the rubber until the cake season ends. Many others will answer this first call without a doubt. Each year brings out good men that were com paratively unknown to the majority of us before. It wouldn’t be so very surprising if the other letter men who are not otherwise engaged do not sud denly aspire to be Mathewsons, Planks, or Schalks, and this causes little wonder because—well the glove, bat, shoes, and arms get restless and are not satisfed until they get in front of the grandstand.
