<i:£g Wi /V^ILITARY. & If" E are glad to see that dis cipline is gaining the ground it has lost in the last two years and believe it will reach the true standard by the end of the year. The new commandant is a grad uate of the Virginia Military In stitute, a veteran of Col. Mosby’s brigade, and a colonel in the late war. He has proven himself to be an excellent soldier and is now trying to teach us the life of a soldier, so that in future should we have cause to go to the de fense of our country, we will be tit for service and may be able to cope with graduates of other col leges for distinction. Even should we not have use for this military training in the future, we should not regret having obtained it, for nothing adds more to a man’s looks than an upright fig ure and good carriage. Now let us all co-operate with our commandant and establish a discipline that we shall not be ashamed of, and let us be so well prepared that, should the inspec tor give us a call this year, we shall be able to have as fine a standing as was made in 1895-96, when Lieut. George T. Bartlett was commandant. From present indications things are moving very smoothly in this line. A new company of volun teers has been organized as a guard of honor to our president and isthetefore named in honor of him. We wish the “Foster Guards” success and only hope they may be able to gain the repu tation that the famous “Ross Volunteers had. They organized under the following officers: H. Japhet, captain; Hal Moseley, 1st lieutenant; S. McCormick, 2nd lieutenant; R. C. Coulter, 1st lieutenant and quartermaster; R. Brown, Is sergeant; E. Walker, 2nd sergeant; Garbold, 3rd ser geant; O’Rourke, 4th sergeant; Pinson, 5th sergeant—all good military men and of high standing among their fellow cadets. The battalion has it original formation of former companies and staff. The companies with their cap tains and sponsors are as follows: A Company—W. I. Bryan cap tain, and Miss Stella Shepard, of Bryan, sponsor, quite a distin guished young lady, beingtheonly woman colonel in the state. D Company—Wm. Walden, captain, and Miss Beulah Ed monds, the eldest daughter of our commandant, sponsor. B Company—O. M. Simpson, captain, formerly 1st lieutenant Company D, succeeding Capt. M. Jackman, who failed to pass into the Senior class and resigned; sponsor has not yet been elected. Company C—C. W. Luhrson, captain, and Miss Edna Foster,
