In all colleges of sufficient age. it has been customary to
place on the Board of Directors some Alumnus of the insti
tution. This has been done not only as a courtesy and an
honor extended by the appointing authority in recognition
of the merit of the work done by the Board of Directors and
Faculty of the College, but experience has proved it to be
the counsel of wisdom. Having been a student of the col
lege, an Alumnus is more intimately acquainted with its
purposes and needs than anyone else, and having reached
the full vigor and maturity of manhood, will espouse the
cause with that energy and fearlessness which can only be
inspired by love for his alma mater.
In accordance with this line of thought the Alumni As
sociation of the A. and M. College of Texas deemed the
selection of one of their number for the next vacancy which
might occur a. fitting memorial of the twentieth session of
our alma mater.
We are in hearty sympathy with the present Board of
Directors, and our action in the matter is really a compli
ment to their good conduct of affairs, in that we desire to
receive some share of the honor and merit which arises
therefrom. Our support is theirs until some of them resign,
when we hope and confidently expect their approval of our
.action.
The following resolution was adopted:
Whereas, our institution has now completed its twentieth
annual session and distributed throughout the state many
old students and graduates who have become leading citi
zens of their respective localities; and,
'Whereas, it is the custom in all the old educational insti
tutions of the country to have at least one of its graduates
on the Board of Directors; therefore, be it
Resolved, That it it is the sense of this association that
we should have a representative of our number on the
College Board of Directors, and that we select by nomina
tion and election a representative man for the position, with
the request that he be appointed to the first vacancy that
occurs.
Mi-. K. \Y. Hutchinson of Houston was unanimously
•elected as the candidate of the Alumni.
Messrs. Downs, Tilson and Ross were appointed a com-
vnittee to draft a suitable memorial and forward it to the
^Governor.
