THE BATTALION' 47 In all colleges of sufficient age. it has been customary to place on the Board of Directors some Alumnus of the insti tution. This has been done not only as a courtesy and an honor extended by the appointing authority in recognition of the merit of the work done by the Board of Directors and Faculty of the College, but experience has proved it to be the counsel of wisdom. Having been a student of the col lege, an Alumnus is more intimately acquainted with its purposes and needs than anyone else, and having reached the full vigor and maturity of manhood, will espouse the cause with that energy and fearlessness which can only be inspired by love for his alma mater. College of Texas deemed the selection of one of their number for the next vacancy which might occur a. fitting memorial of the twentieth session of our alma mater. We are in hearty sympathy with the present Board of Directors, and our action in the matter is really a compli ment to their good conduct of affairs, in that we desire to receive some share of the honor and merit which arises therefrom. Our support is theirs until some of them resign, when we hope and confidently expect their approval of our .action. The following resolution was adopted: Whereas, our institution has now completed its twentieth annual session and distributed throughout the state many old students and graduates who have become leading citi zens of their respective localities; and, 'Whereas, it is the custom in all the old educational insti tutions of the country to have at least one of its graduates on the Board of Directors; therefore, be it Resolved, That it it is the sense of this association that we should have a representative of our number on the College Board of Directors, and that we select by nomina tion and election a representative man for the position, with the request that he be appointed to the first vacancy that occurs. Mi-. K. \Y. Hutchinson of Houston was unanimously •elected as the candidate of the Alumni. Messrs. Downs, Tilson and Ross were appointed a com- vnittee to draft a suitable memorial and forward it to the ^Governor. Messrs. Philpott, Trenckman, Fuller, Smith and Fearhake
