THE BATTALION. 13 here and there with the botanical stu dent’s favorite fiower, the spring beauty. 1'he First Class has elected E. L. Bruce as valedictorian for the Class of ’94 and to respond, the Second Class chose B. C. Watkins. Work has commenced on the artillery house, on the completion of which the cannon will arrive. They are of the latest improved style, and will add an other interesting feature to our ever growing college. The Calliopean Society’s annual cele bration vvas decided as one of the most interesting events of its kind that has ever been at the college. The debateors contested for Tom Kyle’s medal, which was declared won by the negative. The Dramatic Club will put on a fa- uorite Texas peice, entitled “Rio Grande. ” The caste has been made and the partic- ipants have commenced the study of their parts. It will be produced at the Assembly hall on some Friday even ing in April. At a meeting of the Corps of Cadets in Assembly hall, for the purpose of electing chairmen of committees and other officers for commencement, the fol lowing were selected: F. N. Houston, chairman arrangement committee; G. B. Oglesby, chairman invitation committee; B. C. Pittuck, chairman reception com mittee; A. U. Smith, chairman floor commi'tee, and “Old Schwebunk” Perce Bittle chairman of decoration commit tee. At a meeting of both societies Ca det Bruce was chosen as representative to the State oratorical contest, which will soon be held at Georgetown. That very popular and much loved ex-Cadet, John O’Barr, of Warrenton, Tex., was selected a* commecement orator. PERSONALS. Gov. Ross visited Waco last month. Mr. Martin, of Marlin, visited his son Harry last month. Messrs. Walton Smither and Ed Sted- man, two old cadets, paid their friends at College a visit a few days ago. Prof. Spence and wife were called tp Austin recently on account of sickness in Prof. Spence’s family. Gov. Ross, commander-in-chief of the Texas United Confederate Veterans, will leave on the 6th for the reunion in Waco. The College was well represented at the lecture of ex-Governor Hubbard in Bryan last month, and all were highly pleased. Misses Stella Shepherd, May Webb, Fannie McQueen, Ada Polk, Alma Sheets, Ollie Wilson, Duskie Walker, Lucy and Jessie Johnson, Julia Ward and Lessie McConnico were visitors last month. Misses Bessie Ross and Rita Shisa re turned from their school at Waco for a few days’ visit and to attend the Ross Volunteers’ h>p, much to the deligat of all. The distinguished orator, ex-Governor Hubbard, in company with several prom inent men of Bryan, made a flying visit to the A. and M. on the 15th ult. Our old friend, D. Schmidt, after a two years’ absence, at last, came tj the conclusion that there was n > place like the A. and M., and therefore has re turned. A meeting of the newly elected officers of the Battalion, was held during the past month and the departments were assigned as follows : Watkins., exchange; Polk, personal ; Jordan, local, ,and Lewis assistant editor-in-chief.
