Shopaholic Takes Manhattan
Sophie Kinsella
Delta Fiction
Rebecca Bloomwood, the hilarious shopaholic
introduced to readers in Sophie Kinsella's previ
ous novel, Confessions of a Shopaholic, returns
in Shopaholic Takes Manhattan.
Kinsella kept the elements that made her first
Shopaholic, novel successful, such as letters from
bank managers denying several requests for fur
ther bank overdrafts and refusing to wipe out
1,000 pounds off her overdraft "accidentally on
purpose."
She also kept Rebecca's hilarious thoughts and
logic rolling throughout the book.
When Rebecca arrives in New York, she uses
three rules to justify her shopping:
1) You can buy things you cannot get in Britain.
2) You can name-drop when you get back
home.
3) Foreign money does not count, so you can
spend as much as you like.
Rebecca's admiration of her shoe collection
can also lead readers to tears of laughter.
"Once I lined [the shoes] all up on my bed and
took a photograph of
them. Which might seem
a bit weird - but I
thought, I've got loads of
photos of people I don't
really like, so why not take
one of something I really
love?"
Of course, Rebecca, a
financial guru, has again
found herself in a finan
cial mess.
Once she meets the
wonderful world of style
I
in SoHo and Barney's, she is destined to plum
met further into debt.
At the same time, she tries to please her ever :
busy boyfriend who is busy trying to secure a
future in New York and please his never-satisfied
mother.
Watching Rebecca squirm her way out of!one
sticky situation after another is enough to make
readers hope Kinsella has a third novel of
Rebecca's financial fiascos in the works. ~
