The bizarre cult television show, The X Files,
is the inspiration for Songs in the Key of X, a
brilliant collection of new songs that is almost
as dark and mysterious as the show itself.
Aside from the magnitude of the legendary
artists who contribute to this album (ranging from
REM to Frank Black to PM Dawn), what makes
Songs in the Key of X so outstanding is the inten
tion behind the album. This is not a soundtrack,
and no one was asked to record songs for this trib
ute. Rather, Songs in the Key of X is a voluntary
collaboration of original music performed by self-
proclaimed X Files fans who wanted to be a part of
the album.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
With that in mind, it goes without saying that
the music on this album fits perfectly into the
eerie X Files motif. And given the quality of the
artists performing, the creepy backdrop of TheX
Files helps to create some unique masterpieces.
PM Dawn contributes the mesmerizing “If You
Never Say Goodbye,” which is quite a change from
the band’s traditional style.
This is a straight rock/pop ballad, not at all
like the sampling, rap fusion that has made PM
Dawn famous. The result of this change,
though, is a beautiful, ethereal sound.
Then there’s the Fdo Fighters’ “Down in the
Park,” which is considerably more sedate than most
of the Fighters’ work. Once again the change works,
and the result is that fans are treated to a new side
of this brilliant band. Such is also the case on Fil
ter’s “Thanks Bro,” a surprisingly mellow acoustic
number, which is one of the album’s highlights.
There are some downsides to this album. If it
seems Sheryl Crow wouldn’t fit into the theme of
The X Files, the assumption is confirmed with
her cheesy contribution, “On the Outside.” Crow
tries too hard to achieve a dark sound and mood,
and she ends up falling on her face with this at
tempt at exploring the unexplainable.
Then there’s the disappointing rendition of
REM’s “Star Me Kitten,” one of two previously
recorded songs on the album. The twist is that
legendary poet William S. Burroughs delivers
the lyrics in spoken word format, with the song’s
melody playing backup.
Although Burroughs’ mysterious voice adds a
new dimension to the lyrics, especially when he
questions, “Have we lost our minds?”, it is disap
pointing that a talent such as Burroughs was giv
en the mere task of reciting recycled lyrics.
The other original song is the incredible “Red
Right Hand” by one of alternative rock’s premiere
gloom bands, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. X Files
creator Chris Carter explains on the inside cover
that the song, which is one of his favorites, is one he
commonly listens to while writing the show’s scripts.
An amazingly original TV show like The X Files
deserves an equally original album, and Songs in
the Key of X fits the bill perfectly.

It is funny how Disney car
toons always age with such grace.
Originally released in Novem
ber 1988, Oliver & Company is
back in theaters, delighting chil
dren of all ages.
But it’s also reminding older
folks of a time before the joys of
computer animation.
Young kitten Oliver (Joey
Lawrence) is saved from the
dangers of New York City by a
ragtag bunch of thieving and
street wise dogs. Under the
watchful eye of his new friends
Dodger (Billy Joel) and Tito
(Cheech Marin), Oliver joins the
gang and begins to learn how to
survive in the big city.
The animals and their mas
ter, Fagan (Dom DeLuise), stay
alive by stealing food and “loot”
from street vendors. But when
Fagan fails to return money to
Mr. Sikes (Robert Loggia), he
finds himself with only three
days to get the money and save
his life.
Soon Oliver and his
friends are involved in a
scandal where Sikes kid
naps a young girl the an
imals have befriended.
Teaming up with Geor
gette (Bette Midler), a
rich poodle from 5th Av
enue, the gang must find
a way to save both Fa
gan and the girl.
The characters are
enjoyable and funny,
with typical hyperbolic perfor
mances by both Marin and Mi
dler.
Marin’s tough talking, feisty
chihuahua and Midler’s prissy,
vain poodle are perhaps the
strongest of the cast, supported
by less extreme performances by
Oliver & Company

Joel and Lawrence.
More entertaining than the
story itself is the animation, void
of all indications of more recent
Disney films. The cartoon is
done entirely with cell anima
tion, strange to those used to the
computer animation of Aladdin
and Beauty and the Beast. This
doesn’t take away from the filn ,
but rather adds an element of
nostalgic imperfection!
The soundtrack is perhaps
most indicative of the film’s age,
with performances by ’80s stars
Billy Joel and Huey Lewis. The
film and music both have a be
bop, Top 40 style with which au
diences can identify from earlier
Disney, before the suave look
and feel of The Lion King.
Ah, sweet remembrance.
