Aggies to form
support group
By DIANA HENSKE
Reporter
Though there are no whales in
Bryan-College Station, the Green
peace Coalition believes there are
other environmental problems that
need to be addressed.
Texas A&M students are starting
a coalition supporting Greenpeace,
an organization that holds non-vio
lent protests in the name of ecology.
“We are needed in every corner of
the planet,” said Lucia Athens, presi
dent of the A&M Greenpeace Coali
tion.
The group plans to investigate
areas involving toxic waste, nuclear
action and wildlife preservation, she
said.
Athens said the coalition is “a net
work of people, a network of infor
mation.” Group members share in
formation and ideas for action and
education of the public.
At the group’s meeting tonight in
401 Rudder at 8:30, the coalition will
present “The Ultimate Environmen
tal Issue,” a slide show addressing
the issue of nuclear action.
Greenpeace originated in British
Columbia in 1971 to oppose atomic
bomb testing in Alaska.
Supporters also stopped France
from testing in the South Pacific,
and encouraged the passage of three
U.N. resolutions to end all nuclear
weapons testing.
The international Greenpeace or
ganization acts as a consultant to the
United Nations. Members also are
active lobbyists to Congress. Because
of the group’s lobbying, the Senate
recently passed legislation calling for
the immediate resolution of the
United States and Soviet test-ban
treaty negotiations.
The Greenpeace Coalition relies
heavily on research to support their
actions.
“Everything we do will be backed
_ by facts,” Athens said.
The organization’s attempts to
protect the environment extend be
yond the well-known tactics of spray
ing baby seals to make their pelts
worthless and interferring with
whaling operations.
Greenpeace members have
blocked the discharge pipes of com
panies polluting waterways, hung
Danners from the smokestacks of air
polluters and chained themselves to
loading platforms to prevent the
transport of uranium for nuclear
purposes.
The A&M coalition has not yet re
ceived the backing of the interna
tional organization because it hasn’t
been able to reach the proper au
thorities, Athens said.
The group is waiting for a reply
from the national office and hopes
that letters from members will at
tract the attention it needs to get
backing, she Said.
The coalition forming at A&M is
growing quickly. In its first semester,
50 people have joined the group.
When the coalition held a mem
bership drive in the Memorial Stu
dent Center, 111 people signed a
sheet expressing interest in the orga
nization.
Jack Inglis, professor of wildlife
science, said the formation of the
Greenpeace Coalition will stimulate
a variety of opinions and positions
within the department.
Inlis said opposition may arise if
Greenpeace assumes an anti-hunter
position. The department helps
ranchers harvest game and maintain
a sustained yield.
Differences of opinion are stimu
lating in an educational environ
ment, Inglis said, because people be
come more thoughtful when issues
emerge.

Cameras record
stabbing fatality
Associated Press
ROSHARON — Videotape cam
eras recorded the fatal stabbing of a
21-year-old Texas prison inmate
Tuesday, the seventh killed this year
in violence within the nation’s sec
ond largest prison system, authori
ties said.
Calvin Clay Massey, serving a
seven-year sentence for burglary of
a habitation in Tarrant County, was
stabbed eight times in the throat,
forehead and chest, said Texas De
partment of Corrections spokesman
Phil Guthrie.
The knifing occurred about 8:35
a.m. in the day room at the TDC’s
Darrington Unit, about 25 miles
south of Houston, Guthrie said.
The incident was recorded by vi
deo cameras installed a month ago at
the unit, Guthrie said. Prison offi
cials are trying to determine whether
the cameras will help reduce inmate
violence.
“For the past month, officials at
the Darrington Unit have been tap
ing the activities in this area,” Gutn-
rie said. “The inmates were fully
aware that their activities were being
taped.”
The latest attack occurred while
Massey and a 29-year-old inmate
were waiting to be searched and re
turned to their cells in the adminis
trative segregation section of the
prison, Guthrie said.
The suspect, who is serving a 9-
year sentence for burglary of a habi
tation in Harris County, pulled an 8-
inch piece of flat metal sharpened to
a point and a 5-inch metal rod and
attacked Massey, he said.
Prison officials said there was no
apparent motive for the stabbing.
“The two had been exercising to
gether for about a month without
any apparent animosity,” Guthrie
said.
Guthrie said both inmates were
kept in administrative Segregation
because each had a history of “com
bative behavior.”
The Brazoria County sheriffs de
partment also is investigating the in
cident, which will be referred to a
grand jury, Guthrie said.
