Willie Nelson denies
IRS claims of tax fraud
Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Country mu
sic star Willie Nelson is singing the
blues over a tix bill of more than
$2.2 million he has received from
the Internal Revenue Service, which
has accused him of civil tax fraud.
Nelson and his wife, Connie, who
live near Austin, denied the allega
tions in a petition filed in U.S. Tax
Court here and contended the in
come and deductions they reported
for the years 1975 through 1978
were correct.
The IRS notified the Nelsons in
October that they owed $1.5 million
in back taxes as well as penalties of
more than $750,000. The IRS con
tends Nelson misreported income
and took improper deductions.
For the years 1975 through 1977,
the IRS said, “all or part of the un
derpayment ... is due to fraud, which
is attributable to Willie H. Nelson.
For the year 1978, “part of the un
derpayment ... is due to negligence
or intentional disregard of rules and
regulations,” and resulted in a 5 per
cent penalty, the IRS said.
Nelson could not be reached for
comment.
The IRS said Nelson understated
by more than $ 1 million his gross in
come for the four years from “ro3d
shows, unexplained bank deposits,
deposits to client exchange accounts,
fan club income and income from
“Frank Brothers.” “Frank Brothers”
has been identified as two men who
sell souvenirs.
