Marine Extension Develops
THE BATTALION f»a|
wt mt m
Texas A&M is developing a
long-range program to station
marine extension specialists along
the Gulf Coast, just as it now
supports agricultural agents
throughout the state.
The project, which emphasizes
applied research, demonstration
and education, is supported by
Texas A&M’s Sea Grant Program
and is part of the university’s
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service.
Last year Texas A&M was one
of six U. S. universities selected
by the National Science Founda
tion for major institutional sup
port to develop the nation’s ma
rine resources. Texas A&M this
month received a $750,000 NSF
grant for second-year operations.
“Five years from now,” ex

“we hope the commercial fisher
man and other marine resources
users will think to call the marine
extension agent for advice, just

Klussmann, TABS specialist
who coordinates the university’s
Sea Grant Advisory Program,
said current efforts focus on
identifying problems and pin
pointing users of newly developed
techniques.
One such problem involves find
ing profitable uses for coastal
marsh land—solutions other than
simply filling them in for housing
developments.
A promising approach is con
version of such marshes into
shrimp culturing ponds, Kluss
mann noted. He said the univer

experimental ponds in Brazoria

is receiving valuable assistance
from private industry and govern

COOPERATIVE EFFORT
A Texas Department of Corrections colt get wormed in a joint struggle by Texas A&ll
veterinary medicine students and a Goree unit inmate. Observing the treatment are Rich
ard Beck (left), who has charge of Goree horse operations, and Dr. W. M. Romane of the
A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. Numerous activities such as this occur daily
throughout the prison system through an interagency contract between TDC and the
A&M college.
The Church..For a Fuller Life..For You
Living on an island has its problems! Islands are just
fine . . . until you run out of bread or need the refrigerator
fixed. That's why we built this rustic bridge last summer.
It's safer for the children than our old boat, and it links
us with our neighbors if we or they need help in a hurry.
There is great need for another bridge these days . . .
not of wood or stone, but of understanding between the
world's people. "No man is an island . . ." We are all
children of God, made in His image.
The Christian Church is the living bridge that seeks to
unite men everywhere in the fellowship of Jesus Christ,
the Prince of Peace. By supporting your church and striving
to live by its teachings, you help to span the gulf of igno
rance and fear that still separates us from our brothers.
