so violent, even at this stage. It
increases the trauma for the
whole country. The violence is so
bad at this point, I just worry
where it’s going to end.”
“You’ve been talking about stu
dent rebellion,” said Dick Horner,
an A&M student who happened
by. “What do you do about a
professor who browbeats the stu
dents with his political ideas and
you either agree or you fail ? ”
“DROP THE course,” Luce
joked. “Other than that, you
could distribute papers against
him, telling what he is teaching
in class. The chairman of the de
partment should be informed of
student feelings. Some way
could be found where someone
sits down with this guy and tells
him you object to the way he
teaches without any class objec
tion allowed.”
Before leaving, Luce had ovp
final observation to make about
A&JM:
“You need more women around
here, man.”
By JANIE WALLACE
Despite some brilliant acting
and excellent sets, “The Lower
Depths” is a slow-moving, boring
flop.
If you need to fulfill an English
203 assignment, the curtain rises
at 8 p.m. in Guion Hall until
Saturday. But don’t get there
early.
Background information for
“The Lower Depths” includes the
following: “Under the original
title of ‘At the Bottom of Life,’
(it) is a parable of life and bares
the truth and shows the value of
illusion to men and women whose
lives seem to have no worth or
meaning.”
The story conveys Gorki’s feel
ing effectively without help from
the actors. Centering around a
traveling old man, the cramped
boarders of a cold, damp base
ment, who are ex-convicts, yell,
quarrel, fight and scream at each
other throughout the play. Luka,
the old man, tries to help each
character shake off the chains of
squalor and rise up in the world
with a “fresh start.” James Den
nis’ Luka is excellent—his man
nerisms, his makeup (although
his hands are forgotten), and his
speech makes Dennis a very con
vincing Luka.
IN THIS drama, the young
lovers do not receive a happy
ending. First, Peppel is a thief
and Vassilisa’s lover. Vassilisa is
the wife of the landlord and
Natasha’s sister. Peppel is in
love with Natasha, but Natasha
is afraid to run off with him be
cause of her sister’s beating.
Then the plot thickens. Vas-
silissa offers Natasha and money
to Peppel if he kills her husband.
Of course, he refuses. But by
accident, the husband is killed by
Peppel and the lovers are sep
arated, one to Siberia and the
other disappearing from a hos
pital (Vassilisa’s beatings were
rough).
A few faults of the perform
ance: The blocking had actors
upstaging each other right and
left; facial expressions and hand
gestures lacked credibility; tim
ing was inconsistent, with some
cues pounced upon and others
followed by thoughtful pauses;
and there was no strong central
characterization, only a conglom
erate of mediocre ones.
THE COSTUMES were more
or less eclectic. The Russian men
were dressed like Russian men of
the period; the women were
dressed in modern outfits. Other
technical aspects were excellent,
except for one flaw: How could

Bacardi rum and Seagram’s Seven
have been sold to poverty-stricken
peasants in Russia ?
Some of the performances, in
ascending order of effectiveness,
were those of:
• Lucy Bishop, as a wishful
prostitute who gives her money
to the Baron, although he never
believes her adventures and ridi
cules her at every possible mo
ment.
• John Friedrick as the Baron
(“a pompous ass”), a Russian
aristocrat who sounds British.
• Thomas Emshoff as the
Actor, who becomes more and
more convincing as the action of
the play unfolds.
• Marc Fleishman as Peppel.
He takes command of his role
after the beginning scenes and
develops a strong character to
become part of the triangle of
actors that hold the play to
gether.
• Ruth Reeves as Vassilisa,
whose cutting remarks and vicious
actions leaves no doubt in the
audience’s mind that she is truly
a “vixen” and a “bitch,” as Peppel
describes her.
• Carl Masterson as Kostylev,
who is superb. His gestures,
speech are parts that mold his
fine characterization of a mean,
miserly landlord.
