educational
psychology and
affiliated faculty at
the CDD, shows
a child a learning
app.

Moderator Roland Martin (left) and Ari Fleischer (center) listen as David
Axelrod (right) answers a question.
AUTISM CONTINUED
Kristi Morin, educational psy
chology doctoral student.
“For example, we will have a
few of the child’s favorite toys in
sight but out of reach,” Morin
said. “When the child reaches
for the toy, we will guide his or
her hand to prompt the use of
the app. Once the voice output
feature of the app is activated, we
immediately give the child ac
cess to the toy as a reward. After
repeating this sequence several
times, the child starts to learn that
he or she needs to touch the app
to get the toy.”
With time, the child will inde
pendently use the device, Morin
said.
Before the technological ap
proaches, Morin said children
with autism had limited options
when it came to communication
devices. Large communication
boards or books were generally
used, but Morin said these de
vices had the potential to socially
isolate the child.
“Children with autism often
feel ‘cool’ when they are carrying
around an iPad, to communicate
versus a large communication
board,” Morin said. “In addition,
apps have the advantage of hav
ing voice output so the child can
hear the word or sentence spoken
after it is touched.”
When the Brazos Valley Re
habilitation Center first opened
its doors to those with autism, it
helped 10 individuals. Since then,
that number has quadrupled.
Educational psychology doc
toral student Margot Boles said
efforts over the last three years
have pushed to develop and en
hance programs for individuals
with autism in the Brazos Valley.
As part of this push, Boles said

daily life.
“The Autism Clinic offers
group and private therapy to
promote communication, social
interaction and daily living skills
training to individuals with au
tism in the community,” Boles
said.
While this technology gives
individuals with autism a way to
communicate their wants, needs
and emotions, there is the down
side of not having the same inter
action as when the individuals use
picto-cards with a partner.
“So that’s somewhat challeng
ing with apps on these mobile de
vices, to figure how to best teach
them to have that social approach
and to use it for communication
because they’re so used to using
iPads for watching their favorite
videos or playing games,” Ganz
said. “V/e’re working how to
best teach them to use them also
as communication.”

what he was saying. I was at his side
all day,” Fleischer said. “I spent vir
tually the entire day in the president’s
office on Air Force One taking ver
batim notes on what he said and did.
I realized this was a historic day and
my notes are the only original notes
describing what happened.”
Axelrod said he experienced first
hand the high-pressure decisions the
president faces, illustrated by the attack
of an American ship off the coast of
Somalia by pirates.
“I never gave a lot of thoughts to
pirates,” Axelrod said. “Then there
was the Captain Phillips incident. I’m
standing with the president and they
are saying, ‘The Navy seals have the
boat and the captain of the pirates. Y ou
have 10 minutes to decide.’ That’s the
way it is. You are posed with these
questions all the time.”
Fleischer said the opportunity to
work at the White House allowed
him to see that preserving American
freedom is vital to the success of the
nation.
“This is the blessing of America, and
I don’t care what party you belong to,
Democrat or Republican, it’s our job
as Americans to preserve freedom, and
that is the story of the White House,”
Fleischer said. “That is what it was
and always will be an honor to have
worked there.”
Elaina Stephenson, political science
senior, said the discussion revealed that
anyone has a shot of working in the
White House.
“It leaves with you hope,” Stephen
son said. “These people are sons of
immigrants with simple backgrounds.
They aren’t just these big gods, so you
think that one day that could be you.”
