Women’s tennis finishes regular
season strong, men’s streak ends
By Alex Scott
Both the Texas A&M men’s and
women’s teams concluded regular
season play this weekend. The women
finished with two conference wins as
the men fell to TCU, ending their win
streak.
The No. 7 Texas A&M men (17-
4, 11-1 SEC) traveled to Fort Worth
Saturday to take on the No. 10 Horned
Frogs (19-6, 2-2 Big 12) for the sec
ond time this year. Like the first time
around, the Frogs emerged as the victor
and spoiled the Aggies’ 10-game win
streak.
Softball splits
doubleheader,
drops series
A&M lose two of three to Auburn
in weekend fraught with rain delays
A&M dropped the doubles point for
just the fourth time this season and was
unable to capture a win on the singles
court, which led to its shutout loss, 0-4.
The Aggies will move forward and
prepare to host the SEC tournament
starting Wednesday, in which they are
projected to be the No. 1 seed.
The No. 10 Texas A&M women’s
team (15-4, 11-2 SEC) remained at
home this weekend as it hosted its final
two conference matches of the regular
season.
On Friday the team hosted the No.
8 Vanderbilt Commodores in a riveting
match that finished in the favor of the
Aggies, 4-3. The win made for A&M’s
sixth straight victory and was its fourth
win of the season over a top-10 ranked
team.
Sunday the Aggies hosted the Ken
tucky Wildcats in a match that was
moved up three hours in an effort to
avoid the rain. In under an hour and a
half, A&M defeated the Wildcats by a
score of 4-0 and captured its 12th win
in its last 13 matches.
The Aggies will look ahead to the
SEC tournament held in South Caro
lina that will begin Wednesday.
Maiy Reves —THE BATTALION
The softball team celebrates at home plate during the Saturday
doubleheader.
By Alex Scott
The No. 23 Texas
A&M softball team split
its doubleheader against the
Auburn Tigers Saturday in a
day that featured three sepa
rate rain delays.
After falling 8-1 to the Ti
gers (40-6, 12-3 SEC) in the
first game of the weekend,
the Aggies entered Saturday
on a mission.
Heading to the third in
ning of the first game, the
Tigers held the lead, 2-1, but
it did not last long. Tori Vi-
dales got the inning started
for the Aggies (32-12, 8-7
SEC) when she knocked
one out of the park, bringing
Ryan home with her.
From that point on it was
all Aggies as they went on to
tally 10 runs in the third an
chored by two Tori Vidales
home runs. Along with Vi
dales, Breanna Dozier, April
Ryan and Cali Lanphear also
recorded hits in the inning.
A&M added one more
run in the fourth inning,
courtesy of Dozier, which
all but sealed the first vic
tory of the weekend for the
team. A&M headed into the
second game of the day with
a 12-4 win after playing just
five innings.
The momentum for the
Aggies, and especially for
Vidales, carried over into the
second game of the double-
header Saturday. The fresh
man hit her third home run
of the day, this time being a
two-run shot.
At the conclusion of the
third inning A&M held a 3-1
lead, but the game was put
on pause due to inclement
weather and did not resume
for nearly an hour and a half.
It was Auburn that
seemed to benefit from the
break in play as it had a
three-mn fourth inning that
helped them it the lead with
a score of 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Brittany Clopton hit a single
that, due to an Auburn error,
led to her rounding the bases
to cut the Tiger lead to two
runs. Following Clopton’s
score, the game entered its
second rain delay and did
not pick back up for another
45 minutes.
Once again, Auburn
came back from the delay
with hot bats. The Tigers
scored two runs on a homer
from Branndi Melero and
did not slow down. The
next time Melero took the
plate the bases were loaded
and she hit a grand slam shot
that extended the Auburn
lead to eight, 12-4.
The eight-mn deficit was
too much for A&M to re
cover in the final inning as
it fell to the Tigers for the
second time on the week
end, 12-4, and dropped the
conference series.
The Aggies will return to
action at 6:30 p.m. Wednes
day when they host Lamar.
