SOCIAL SECURITY
CONTINUED
“Some of you are saying,
‘Am I on the list or not?’ If you
taught last fall, yes,” Watson
said. “So it was a mistake, we
know exactly how it happened.
We are concerned that a par
ticular staff member posted this,
but that’s not the problematic
thing. ”
The problematic part, Wat
son said, was the supervisor over
the staff member who should
have trained this staff member
not to make these mistakes. The
protocol typically has checks to
prevent the posting of social
security numbers, but these
checks were not executed.
Watson said the mistake oc
curred when an A&M employ
ee generated a standard yearly
report, Watson said the state le
gally requires A&M to include
social security numbers, among
other information, as sources
for the report’s data for it to be
correcdy turned in. The error
occurred when the employee
posted these sources to a non
password-protected area online.
So far, Watson said, A&M
has been able to track every site
visit where the social security
numbers were posted, and all 32
accesses to that site have been
accounted for.
“Eighteen of them were our
employees who had a reason to
be on that site,” Watson said.
“We have also looked at all of
their information to see if they
have any social security num
bers on their site so we can do
that for our people. All 14 of the
others we have been able to say
exactly — and we have even
contacted a few — to know
exacdy why they contacted this
site. So we have accounted for
all 32 contacts to this site.”
Although security cannot be
completely guaranteed, Watson
said the probability of fraudu-
lence is relatively low for this
particular incident.

tissue, as opposed to using replacement materials like
metal implants, is very beneficial to the body of the
patient.”
Gaharwar’s team takes a revolutionary approach to
the bone problem.
“We load hydrogels with nanoparticles and inject
them near the site of the injury,” Gaharwar said.
“They will basically call stem cells to the defect and
induce, or ask, the cells to differentiate into bone tis
sue. We are essentially asking the body to regenerate
the particular area of the bone. ”
This technology may have a huge impact on the
treatment of several medical issues. Some applica
tions it will be used in are segmental bone defects,
where there are multiple broken bones in one area
and it cannot heal itself, oral surgery, spinal fusions
and bone cancer patients.
“Whenever a person gets cancer or a tumor in
a bone, they will need to have the bone area taken
out,” Gaharwar said. “But once the tumorous bone is
removed we can inject the hydrogel, and it will treat
segmental defects that are caused by the removal of
the tumor.”
This new technology is expected to be used not
just in a clinical setting, but also in the military.
“We foresee targeting, not only a clinical applica
tion, but also in a battlefield setting, or a kind of real
world application for the Department of Defense,”
Carrow said.
The technology is still in testing phases, and a re
lease date is not yet set.
“It’s difficult to put a timetable on it because we
are using a lot of materials that haven’t been used
before,” Carrow said. “While the novelty is exciting,
it is just hard to say.”

community and also to the
transgender community and also
to the bi-sexual community,”
Kelly said.
Kelly said this all began when
he discovered a book called
“The Lost Gay Novels,” by An
thony Slide.
“I said, ‘Well, if they’re lost,
maybe I can find them,”’ Kelly
said. “There are 50 of them and
I’m a checklist guy and I said,
‘Let’s see how many of them I
can get.’ So, I started and I start
ed with first editions, they all
have dust jackets and if I could
get them signed, I got them
signed. Let me report that I only
have 48 of these, I’ve got two
left and one of them, though, is
in the Evans Library.”
The collection includes nov
els, magazines, newspapers and
journals from numerous LGBT
authors. Kelly said he hopes
that by having the collection at
A&M, awareness is raised about
the LGBT community.
Bobbie Banner, biomedical
sciences senior and member of
the Pride Community Center of
Bryan-College Station attended
to represent the Pride organiza
tion and also to better under
stand the Don Kelly exhibit.
“Anything that has to do
with the LBGTQ community
is important to show to A&M,”
Banner said. “Visibility, vis
ibility, visibility. It’s important
to get the word out there in a
manner which is welcoming and
friendly.”
The opening Wednesday co
incided with the 30th anniver
sary of the U.S. Supreme Court
ruling on Gay Student Services
v. Texas A&M, which required
universities to recognize gay
student groups under the Lirst
Amendment. A&M’s refusal to
recognize Gay Student Services
prompted the 1985 decision.
The organization, now known
as LGBTQ Aggies, remains ac
tive.
