Big Event service continues
Provided
Members of The Big Event organization are
working to complete unfinished job sites.
By Lindsey Gawlik
Just because The Big
Event took place Satur
day doesn’t mean its work is
over.
The approximately
300-person organization
will send staff assistants and
executive members to job
sites for the next few weeks
until they feel the commu
nity is selflessly served, said
Kevin Brooks, The Big
Event director and manage
ment senior.
“We try to serve all the
residents who we promised
we would serve,” Brooks
said. “Sometimes we fall
short, but if we can and if we
have the manpower, we serve
all the jobs we possibly can.”
Brooks said The Big
Event is trying its hardest to
go to unfinished or unvisited
job sites and implored unsat
isfied residents to email The
Big Event to make its mem
bers aware of what needs to
be done.
Riley DuPuy, recruit
ment executive and indus
trial distribution senior, said
unfortunately every year
some people don’t show up
to The Big Event and their
assigned job sites slip through
the cracks. The organization
wants to complete the re
maining 20 to 25 jobs.
“This happens every
year,” DuPuy said. “A hand
ful of jobs don’t get done, or
maybe they aren’t done well
by students and so we take it
upon ourselves to go fix the
problems that have occurred
and make an effort to serve
every resident that’s signed
up and show them we want
to serve them.”
Tanner Button, The Big
Event staff assistant and fi
nance senior, went out to
one of the residents, Dana
Wacasey, to whom no stu
dents were sent Saturday.
While doing a final job
check with his Big Event
partner. Button realized they
had time to lend a hand on
their own.
“Dana was one of our
waitlist job sites as a staff
partnership, so with waitlist
jobs we are not sure if we
will have the students to go
out there on the day of The
Big Event,” Button said. “So
we did the job checks last
week and we realized she re
ally needed help around the
house.”
It was an incredible ex
perience, Button said, and it
was great to see how thank
ful Wacasey was that they
came after The Big Event
festivities ended.
“It was fim just trying to
carry on what The Big Event
was trying to do and helping
and saying thank you to local
residents that go beyond just
the day of The Big Event,”
Button said.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
A 'thank you' to The Big Event
■ ow about those Aggies!
LgJ For well over 20 years we
I have participated as recipients in
I The Big Event, each year with
great success. This year was no different.
The crew from Schuhmacher Hall went
above and beyond our expectations. They
tore down two old sheds and hauled off
the debris in good time. These Ags were
well-mannered and professional. They
were team-oriented and well organized,
courteous, tenacious in the work and
very thorough. They ensured tjjfit all our
needs were met and did a fantastie-jolvofiu
cleaning up. They even used their own 4^
vehicles to haul the old materials away.
It’s been a long time since I have wit
nessed such teamwork. Each one working
diligently with the others all while treating
each other with dignity and respect. That
makes me proud to be a part of the Aggie
family and a member of this community.
Of course each year when the job is done
we take a picture of the team just before
the traditional ringing of the bell. A special
thanks to the Big Event and especially this
year to Schuhmacher Hall. Susan and I
extend our sinperest gratitude!
