NEWS The Battalion I 2.20.15 3 Allison Bradshaw — THE BATTALION Women were integrated in the Corps 40 years ago, an occasion that will be commemorated this weekend. 40 YEARS CONTINUED had to he in a nicer uniform than what we usually wore and I had a late class that day so I didn’t march in with my unit. So I changed by myself after class and was running to get there and there was another female student there with her mother who looked at me with the most horrible expression on her face along with her mother and just looked at me and my uniform and called me a name. I just couldn’t believe that some one would do that to a person who they didn’t even know just by what uniform I was wearing.” Barth said this experience is still hard to talk about and that, as a member of one of two all-female outfits, it was of ten hard to get to know any of the male cadets because of a stigma placed on women. “It was still pretty discriminatory,” Barth said. “Some of them, to put it mildly, were very discouraged to get to know us in fear that there may be ret ribution once their upperclassmen found out that they were even talking to some female in the Corps.” Barth said there were a select few men who made strides to get to know the female cadets. “I can still remem ber a few names that were what I would call ‘the welcome ex ception,’” Barth said. “Those were the ones who would get to know you and who were very likeable, very profession al, the type of people you would hope to find once you got on to active duty.” Years later, Barth said it’s about time a woman Corps commander was named. Alyssa Michalke, who was named the 2015-2016 Corps commander this week, said she has been motivated and encour aged by female cadets that preceded her. “The perception from the Corps has done a complete 180 since women came in 40 years ago,” Michalke said. “The hostility and adversi ty that they faced 40 years ago was insane and that was even from their fellow ca dets and even from their fellow female cadets. The hazing in the female outfits was bad, if not just as worse as it was in the male outfits.” Michalke said she believes that the amount of female involvement in the Corps will increase in the years to come and is excited to meet more female cadets at this weekend’s event. The event will feature a tour of the Quad, a baseball outing, a luncheon and a run hosted by the Corps. Those inter ested in attending the event are encour aged to contact the Texas Aggies Corps of Cadets Association. "The perception from the Corps has done a complete 180 since women came in 40 years ago." Alyssa Michalke MICHALKE CONTINUED do, I want to lead the cadets, I want to be a first sergeant, I want to be a commanding officer,’” Michalke said. Finding out her new position wals nerve wracking and humbling, Michalke said, she was called into the office of Brig. Gen. Joie Ramirez, Corps commandant, to sit down with him, his assistants and current Corps Commander David Trigg. At this point, Ramirez told Michalke he had some news for her. “And my heart just stopped and I said ‘Oh no, he’s go ing to tell me bad news,”’ Michalke said. Michalke said her heart skipped a beat when she heard Ramirez say she would be the next Corps commander. “And I tried to say something but I was just like — my jaw was dropped and I couldn’t get any words to come out,” Michalke said, smiling. Michalke said her friends and mentors inspired her to become first the sergeant major and now the command er. She said she was originally nervous and unsure about applying for the two positions, but getting support from Trigg and Corps Chief of Staff Noah Anderson meant a lot to her. The two pushed her to apply for commander after a heart-to-heart conversation. “I’ve just been so blessed here, and this wasn’t some thing I ever expected,” Michalke said. She said her parents were also big influences in her life, and always pushed her to do well both academically and physically. “My mom always pushed me to do well in school,” Mi chalke said. “She was valedictorian of her high school, na tional merit scholar. She had like a 3.9999 GPA at A&M. I think she had one B in her entire time at A&M.” She said her dad, on the other hand, pushed her to be her best physically in basketball and at hunting and fish ing, which are some of her favorite down-time activities. “I’ve been playing basketball since I was four years old,” Michalke said. “I just the physicality of it, the intensity, in your face, and I can even be kind of a trash talker at times. I’m super competitive and anyone you meet, anyone that knows me will tell you I’m super competitive.” Next year will hold several challenges for Michalke. Among the most visible will be the Corps dormitory tran sition into the Commons as the Quad undergoes a series of renovations. “It’s going to be a whole new ball game next year, and that’s something I’m a little concerned about, but I’ll stay here all summer and really evaluate it with the comman dant and his staff and hopefully well be good to go for next year,” Michalke said. She said experimentation will be a part of figuring out what is best for the split. She said she looks forward to serving as commander and for whatever awaits her after A&M as well. “I’m looking at the offshore oil industry and either go ing into offshore platform design or subsea systems,” Mi chalke said. “Not really sure yet because I haven’t had my senior level classes yet, but I’m looking at an internship this summer with a subsea company just to see more of that side of that company, but I know I for sure want to go into offshore oil.” i io;< Place an Ad Phone 979.845.0569 Suite L400, Memorial Student Center Texas A&M University When to Call 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Insertion deadline: 1 p.m. prior business day VISA gfE PH Private Party Want Ads $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1,000 or less (price must appear in ad).
