Men's golf team looks to
bounce back from fall slump
No. 49 Aggies begin Hawaii tournament Wednesday
By Cole Stenholm
After a sixth-place finish in its first
spring event of the season, the No.
49 Texas A&M men’s golf team now
takes its 2015 campaign to Lihue, Ha
waii, for the John A. Burns Intercolle
giate event, hosted by the University of
Hawaii, running Wednesday through
Friday.
Texas A&M is one of 16 teams in
the event, of which five are nation
ally ranked inside the top 50, including
the four-time defending tournament
champion No. 23 University of Cali
fornia. Texas A&M recorded a second-
place finish in last year’s edition, nine
strokes behind California.
The Aggies, despite a slow start to
the fall portion of their season, who
suffered setbacks due to player injury
and academic ineligibility, have already
achieved a higher finish in their one
spring tournament — Feb. 2 at the Sea
Best Invitational — than they did in the
entire fall.
Junior Adria Arnaus said he sees the
improvement, but a complete team ef
fort will be required for their progress
to continue.
“Everybody has worked a lot this
last Christmas,” Arnaus said. “We came
back and this first tournament, there has
been an improvement. That’s all we
look for and hopefully, right now, in
Hawaii, we keep moving up. It’s got
to be a little bit from everybody, you
know. It cannot be one or two because
it’s four of the ones that count. And
hopefully, if we do that right and ev
eryone is putting his own part, then
at the end of the season we will be at
nationals and putting for the champi
onship.”
The 6,991-yard, par-72 Wailua mu
nicipal golf course plays host to the
event.
LSU CONTINUED
proceeded to go on a 24-5 run orches
trated by Tim Quarterman. After starting
0-for-2 from the field, Quarterman made
his next two that both went from deep.
Additionally, LSU held House scoreless
for the remainder of the half, and nine
A&M turnovers left the Aggies trailing by
five after 20 minutes of play.
The opening eight minutes of the
second half consisted of back-and-forth
play until LSU sophomore forward Jar-
ell Martin — who averages just under 16
points per game — headed to the bench
after committing his fourth foul. In turn,
House sparked what would be a 12-0 run
for the Aggies. House scored eight of the
12 points on the run, including the equal
izer that followed an Alex Caruso steal.
A&M entered the final minute of play
with a two-point advantage. Following an
empty possession, LSU was forced to foul
and it was House who made the trip to the
charity stripe. After two made free throws
from House the Aggies never looked back
on their way to a 68-62 victory.
Kennedy said, simply: “You win with
good players.”
The Aggies look to keep their mo
mentum going when they travel* to South
Carolina at 11 a.m. Saturday.
