NEWS The Battalion I 2.16.15 3 REVIEW Fifty shades of terrible Film falls short with incompatible characters and useless scenes JackRiewe L ife and A rts wri ter £ U 1 ifty Shades of Grey” is like a pH romantic comedy that believes it’s the “Mona Lisa” of films. Entering the movie theater, I didn’t know what to expect and I kept thinking to myself, “This could be good, you never know.” However, within 10 minutes I knew I didn’t like the movie. Actors Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) and Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) are the least compatible couple that can pos sibly be in a movie together. Christian has the blandest personality held next to An astasia’s — Ana for short — who provides comic relief throughout the entire movie. The story is mainly about transition, the loss of innocence and the parallel transformation that happens between the two main characters. Ana is introduced to a sexual world, embracing it quickly and soon becoming Christian’s willing submis sive. Christian starts off cold as a statue, but soon finds himself doing things for her that he’s never done, making it seem like he’s falling in love, which is something he admits he doesn’t do. Christian states multiple times that he does not go on dates, yet by the next scene the two go out on one. Then he says he doesn’t sleep in the same bed with anyone. Sure enough, in the next scene he is PROVIDED shown sleeping in the same bed as Ana. The movie is plagued with useless scenes like this, with no character develop ment, ending with the two main characters kissing then saying something really corny, wanting the audience to perceive it as re ally profound and romantic. Christian Grey should be locked up in prison. It’s completely illogical to fall in love with him. Although he might have looks and money, the bad vibes radiating from this guy are insane. He is terrifyingly creepy and gives off every imaginable sign that he’s a serial killer. Ana is never able to be alone because Christian shows up wherever she is — in a very Spiderman- esque way, albeit much creepier — adding to his perpetually disturbing personality. For example, he shows up at her work after meeting her the day before and buys some rope, masking tape and of course, cable ties. I don’t know if it was the fault of direc tor Sam Taylor-Johnson or of the actors, but the movie just didn’t put me in the characters’ shoes. The characters in the movie are sub-par and merely stay on screen rather than connecting to the audi ence. Throughout! the movie, during the most intense scenes, people could be heard laughing in the theater, myself included. Naked scenes were abundant, unsurpris ingly, so watching this movie with anyone other than your closest friends or by your self could make for an awkward occasion. The soundtrack was all over the place, playing everything from Frank Sinatra to a horrible attempt at a classical version of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love.” “50 Shades of Grey,” was so mediocre that by next Valentines Day it will have faded into obscurity and be nothing more than an unpleasant memory. That is, until the next movie in the series comes out. Jack R iewe is an English junior and life and arts writer for The Battalion. W. GOLF A&M golfer Fabrizio claims individual title By Cole Stenholm The Texas A&M women’s golf team posted its lowest score of the Seminole Matchup in Tallahassee, Fla., in its final round Sunday, but that’s not why it’s celebrating. A&M sophomore Bianca Fabrizio claimed the individual title of the event in dramatic fashion by knocking off Fur man University’s No. 33 Taylor Totland on the second hole of a sudden death playoff. Fabrizio held the top spot of the leaderboard following the first and second rounds of the event, which fielded 66 play ers from 12 different universi ties, with a three-under 69 and an even-par 72. However, she needed birdies on the 53rd and 54th holes of the competition at the Southwood Golf Course to card a one-over 73 and force the sudden-death playoff with Totland, whose final-round 71 "placed her in the same position. The first playoffhole failed to yield a winner, but the competi tive stalemate would not last. On the second hole of playoff action, Fabrizio sank a lengthy 30-foot birdie putt to knock off the nationally ranked Totland and clinch her first career col legiate victory at Texas A&M, marking the first individual vic tory for A&M in nearly a year. Fabrizio did not stand as the lone Aggie on the leaderboard, however. Sophomore team mate Marijosse Navarro nearly secured a spot in the playoff after posting a final-round 70. However, hef"score proved to be one stroke shy of the two- under mark set by Fabrizio and Totland, leaving her in sole pos session of third place. As a team, Texas A&M fin ished in a tie for fifth with Ken- nesaw State University at 21 over par, nine strokes behind first place Furman, which, in addition to Totland, had three other players compile 54-hole top-20 finishes. The Aggies take the week off before heading to Santa Ana, California, for the UC Irvine Invitation that runs Feb. 23-24. SPACE CONTINUED David Kanipe, aerospace professor of engineer ing practice, worked at NASA for 38 years be fore coming to A&M. He said the test showcased SpaceX’s ability to innovate and react quickly as a company despite failure — two important traits in the space industry. “Beyond the accident, what struck me about it was that commercial companies are really able to be pretty nimble when it comes to things like this,” David Kanipe said. “They can recover and turn things around a lot faster than the govern ment can. I worked at NASA for 38 years so I have seen a lot of this kind of thing. It is re freshing to know that they can come back pretty quickly.” Dianne Kanipe, engineering student enhance ment specialist, considers January’s test to be a success in its own right. “I do not see it as a failure,” Dianne Kanipe said. “The fact that they came from orbit and hit that spot, the litde bitty spot in the ocean, and almost had it oriented right, is something. The success of what [SpaceX] accomplished was phenomenal. That is why you test these things. You find out what doesn’t work right and what does. What worked right was tremendous and now they just tweak it a little bit. “ Last Wednesday’s planned test was cancelled because storm weather in the ocean barge’s area made it difficult to handle. The next full landing attempt will not likely come until April, accord ing to spaceflightnow.com. If the technology is proven, it could result in cheaper and greater access to space, said Charles Hermann, professor of international affairs. “Putting any kind of payload in space, includ ing human beings and everything else, it takes, normally, a multistage rocket,” Hermann said. “Only the top section usually actually goes into space, and the rest falls back to earth. So the idea is to try and recover the giant early stages of rock ets and to be able to make repairs on them and refit them and use them repeatedly. Which could reduce significantly the cost of putting things into space.” This is why SpaceX hopes to change the way the space industry thinks about a rocket’s life span, Hermann said. “The idea is the United States is trying to prod and encourage more private sector companies, like SpaceX, to get involved in getting our ma terial into space,” Hermann said. “And for them to be economically successful, they are going to need to be able to reuse the bottom stages of the rockets, and that is what all of this effort is about.” SpaceX is owned and operated by Elon Musk. SpaceX has been involved in a number of space experiments in order to cut the cost of space travel, Kanipe said. “What Elon Musk does really well is inno vate, and that encourages competition because the other companies don’t want to be left be hind,” David Kanipe said. “You get a cycle of improvement and other companies have to pick it up. They can’t be left behind.” Place an Ad Phone 979.845.0569 Suite L400, Memorial Student Center Texas A&M University When to Call 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Insertion deadline: 1 p.m. prior business day VISA Private Party Want Ads $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1,000 or less (price must appear in ad).
