Removing the ban on American oil exportation may cause local oil prices to increase, but
would ultimately lead to increased global economic stability, an A&M study says.

vast supplies of natural gas that could help
U.S. and European trade partners escape any
leverage Russia could have.
“Meanwhile, the EU depends on Russia
for about half of its natural gas supplies and
pays a monopoly price,” Griffin said. “Un
locking our vast domestic supplies is good
economics here at home and good for our
trading partners in Europe and Asia.
Cause said the United States is holding
out on its trading partners economically.
“The argument is that we as a country are
committed to free trade,” Cause said. “Why
should our trading partners be denied access
to a tradable good like oil, when we do not
want them to deny us their tradeables and
we want our other products to be able to
enter their markets?”
Allowing American oil to be exported
might marginally increase the price of oil lo
cally, Cause said, but it would help smooth
out global price fluctuations, which would
provide for global economic stability and
CLASS GIFT CONTINUED
“We really want to start a tradition of
giving with the Class of 2015,” said Alyssa
Bailey, class gifts chair for 2015.
Another goal of the fundraiser is to make
graduating students more aware of the avail
able resources the Association has to offer,
including the “Find An Aggie” search page,
which connects former and current students.
Class Agent Meghan de Amaral said she
doesn’t think students realize the potential
the Association has to help them in their ev
eryday lives and job searches.
“I do think there are plenty of untapped
resources in [the Association of Former Stu
dents], and you can go to them to get help
for anything, even making a logo for your
business,” De Amaral said.
Smith said because the website is through
that, in the long run, is good for the United
States economy.
Lori Taylor, associate professor in the
Bush School and director of the Robert A.
Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics
and Public Policy, said the primary point
Cause and Griffin are trying to get across is
that the oil industry and economy is global.
“The price of oil is set in a world market
— the price of gas, less so, but still heavily
influenced by global economic conditions,”
Taylor said. “And so the United States es
sentially imposing a ban on exporting U.S.
product harms the United States without
any real impact on the rest of the world.”
The Mosbacher Institute funds research
like the study by Cause and Griffin. Taylor
said the study is aimed at policy makers and
policy influencers.
“We are trying to make sure that what
ever decision-making occurs in Washington
and Texas is well-informed and that policy
makers are fully aware of the implications
and the sting of prospective policies,” Tay
lor said.
the Association, members offered help with
the web design.
“They were really excited about it, be
cause not only does it give them the chance
to interact with the students, but also when
ever you make a donation to ‘Fifteen for ’ 15’
you automatically get registered as a mem
ber at the Association,” Smith said.
Kathryn Greenwade, vice president of the
Association, said they were pleased to part
ner with the Class of 2015 as it encourages
its classmates to give back to Texas A&M.
“In helping with this effort we think stu
dents will see how striall gifts, when com
bined with those of other Aggies, can make
a powerful difference on our campus,” Gre
enwade said. “The support the Association
provides to Texas A&M is rooted in that
principle, and we hope students will see the
power of small gifts.”
